Do you ever auction your fish at this?
Did I hear an offer that you would be a personal shopper for us that can't make it??

So it's a sit-down deal then? Not a silent auction?
We'll probably be there around noon. Not staying too long, either.
This will be the first fish auction I have ever attended. I'm excited. :D

Auctions are fun... and there is always something different to be had. I see item viewing is from 10-11, so you might want to get there in time to view everything before the auction starts. That way you can see if there is anything you're interested in and watch for it to come up for auction.

I haven't auctioned anything there as yet, I finally just joined the Calgary Aquarium Society and you need to be a member to auction any items. Anyone can bid/buy items, but you need to be CAS member to auction items. I believe ACE members can bring down items for auction as well.
Trust me, you don't want me to be your personal shopper ? :NoWay:

It's certainly not silent. Christian and another fellow from ACE (I don't remember his name right now) keep things moving along pretty quickly.
There are always refreshments and other things to keep people occupied there.
I usually go down around 10:30ish and stay till about 1:00ish.
Usually it's a good show with lots of variety.

We might be able to make it for 10am if we leave the night before, but we might be travelling at 10am if we have to leave that morning. It all depends on work on Saturday. We'll see.
I would love to make it! :)

Pam, if you allow Blaine to shop for you, you're going to need more tanks.

Sounds like it is a long drive for you. Hope you get a chance to go. If you do, of course, we'll be dying to hear what you head home with.

Thanks, Jay. It's only a 3 hour drive, but it sure seems longer at night. I hate driving at night.
If we won some fish, would they be ok until Monday night in the breather bags? I am assuming they would be, they are shipped as long or longer usually.

Oct 9th 2008, 02:44 PM
Breather bags will hold them for a couple of days and I would take a cooler with you.
CACAdmin
Oct 9th 2008, 02:54 PM
I assume that means you won't be able to get them home &/or into tanks until then. They'll be just fine... just keep them warm. (put the fish bags in a styro box if you have one or a cooler, or simply in a box or bag with newspaper as insulation... you can use a heatpack or simply put a bag of hot water in there with them to keep them toasty. (just don't let it touch the fishbags :wideeyed: ...too hot) Of course, depending upon the fish, many are quite fine at room temps.
If they're not in breather bags but regular fishbags, just be sure they have lots of air. (a big mistake one sometimes sees at auctions is people thinking they need lots of water instead of minimal water and lots of air in the bags). If this is the case, you'll want to re-bag the fish, so take some bags with you.

And some dechlorinated water in case one of the bags springs a leak. You can also use bean bags and heat them in microwave to help keep it warm if you do not have heat packs.

Thanks Jay, you had a good point too about a bag of warm water. We don't always things about the simple things. There is always a couple of leaky bags at auctions, so far none have been mine. Fingers crossed. It was one of the things I forgot to take, thank goodness I did not need it.

Those bean bags are a great idea. I use those Cryopak Hot/cold packs. I managed to pick some up really cheap ($1.00 ea. I think) last year at the end of the summer. They were clearing out summer picnic items.
The only thing about a bag of warm water is that it cools more quickly but of course it's fairly easy to refresh with warm water.
An icecream bucket (with lid) can also come in handly if you end up purchasing something in a leaky bag which is too large for your fishbags.

Some very good suggestions here, thanks everyone!
Ice cream bucket w/lid, a cooler, exra bags, extra water, heat pack, newspaper. Check.

What I saw of it was a good auction, lots of plants, fish and equipment.
A better selection of goodies this year, I was tempted a few times.
I saw 1 bag of Monty swords that I bid on, but someone wanted them worse than I did. (actually I just didn't bring enough money with me)
But on a good note, that means there are some around here somewhere !
I headed out about 12:30, had to get on with the family activities.

I generally don't worry about taking much cash simply because there usually aren't any fish there that fit with my current plans.
Wild type livebearer enthusiasts are few and far between around here.
You should have had a bunch BN Plecos here, they were selling for good prices.
Apparently black Cories are all the rage here as well.
Saw a couple bags of Killies go as well, they tempted me, but I'm not ready for them yet.

Not too many down here either!

Shucks they were going for peanuts here. I took 2 bags of 4 in each to Hamilton and they went for a couple of bucks.

Have not seen them around here yet.

I love mine, getting used to this whiteworm business, but thinking endler fry may end up as dinner some days for variety. Every time I turn around there are more, and no one wants them down here.

Pam, the next time you want to auction your longfins you just skip the whole thing and bring them to me - I guarantee I'm offering more than that  .

We were there! It was awesome fun! :D
We won a bunch of stuff... a 10g [$3], four Dalmatian Sailfin Mollies [$10, will post pictures later], a kit with food & sponge filter [$5], a C02 kit [$28], a light [$11]. We were paddle #57 and our total came to $57. Weird.
We tried to bid for the breeding Angels but the lady in front of us won them ALL.
We only talked to a couple people, but I am wondering if we talked to you, Blaine? Would've been nice to know who you were at the time, lol. We were the young couple (really tall guy, really short girl) who looked starstruck the whole time, Hahaha.
We had soooo much fun. :D

Those Angels I was mentioning, went for about $40/pair. We tried for them, but we were nervous about transporting something so delicate all that way. To be honest, I can get them for cheaper here in town, too. But I do think they were worth it for the lady who won them, they were very beautiful.
The black Corys were VERY popular, I don't remember how much they went for, but it was high.
A couple of the larger tanks went for a total STEAL. Too bad we only drive a Neon (no cargo space for something that big).
Plants were going for decent prices. I had my eye on a few plants but we ran out of time, so my hubby 'bumped' the Sailfins for me and then we took off. Had to help Grandma make supper.
Only talked with a few people, like I said, but the people I did talk to were very nice, freindly, and helpful.
I want to find the Lethbridge club, if there is one, and become more involved with other local breeders/keepers; we had such a blast at the auction in Calgay, but I can't go all the way there every time.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your first auction. As for the Angels breeding pairs always go for more money. Congrats on all you wins.

As for you, Blaine, you definitely showed more restraint than I ever do... I always come home with something (I guess the secret is leaving the wallet behind  )
