My hermit crab was quickly outgrowing it's original shell so I dropped in some larger ones that I had purchased and it immediately began checking them out. To my surprise, and within an hour, it had moved into it's new home. I had hoped to witness the transition for myself but missed out. What an amazing creature they are to watch and what a great addition they are to to any aquarium.

That would have been cool to witness... to bad you missed out. Of course, when he/she outgrows this shell you will once again have the opportunity. They are fascinating creatures.

I can't recall which documentary, but I once saw footage showing that sometimes they will opt to steal a shell from another hermit crab and force that one to find another shell or accept the discarded one.

It amazes me to watch that kind of instinctive behaviour in action.

what happens if you don't buy another shell and it out grows its recent one? will it die or just live with no protection?
