View Full Version : How Many Types of Food do you Feed?

I feed them all. I feel that the best way to ensure that they're getting everything they need is by feeding a wide variety of foods. For every scientific study that says something is good for us, there's another that says the complete opposite, and so it also is with fish nutrition studies. The difference is it is not studied nearly enough, especially independently.

I also think that the more they can get from unprocessed foods, the better, just like us. We could get everything we need to live in a pill form too, but that doesn't mean it would be good for us. There's also the chance that we require something from a varied diet that scientists haven't discovered yet. If scientists don't know about it, they won't include it in their processed products. If you attempt to more closely match what a fish would eat in the wild, you have a better chance of getting them what they need.

I can't imagine how a bunch of compressed powder, vitamins, preservatives, binders, etc, could beat direct sources of nutrition. Therefore I treat commercial fish food as a supplement - a multivitamin, if you will, and I feed various high-quality products.

But that's only my opinion of course, and I'd love to hear yours.

pleco(not sure what speices just yet) : lettuce, grapes, cucumber, zucchini, apple, carronts, peas, oranges, bananas. and whatever else i feel like.

snails : pretty much every thing above

killies, gorumais & rainbow shark will eat peas. and the shark will eat lettuce and cucumber and zucchini.

otos : will sometimes eat what the pleco eats but are usualy more happy with algae.

rawmeats..

Snails : sometimes like to eat shrimp.

Weather loaches : they love eatting snails, i usualy break open the shell with a jab through the heart for that fastest death, then i break it open a bit more and pull the whole thing out with some tweezers

I use many types of food too. Spirulina, veg and shrimp flakes, dec brine shrimp, blood worms dried and frozen to the fish.
Shrimp pellets, algae wafters, juvie food, homemade food made by friends and myself to bottom feeders, snails and shrimp.
Veggies of course, what ever I have at the time or what ever is in my garden. Main ones are cucs and zuchini and broccoli stocks.

And you have snails & Plecos I know - do you find that any of your other fish get into the vegies?

I have Boesemani & Dwarf Rainbows, Guppies, Swords, and RR Minnows and yes I find them picking at the veggies occasionally.
Also have 5 cories.

I use all kinds of stuff. Most of my fish are pretty small, so they get a squirt or two of live baby brine shrimp. Big fish get live chopped redworms once in a while. I also use commercial pellets, flakes, frozen foods, fresh veggies where appropriate. Once in a while, I'll make an omnivore paste food.

The recipe I use is one that's been up on the Krib for a long time. I don't bother with the anise extract.

I feed it by grating pieces from frozen chunks and allowing it to thaw. The fish eat the little worm-like shavings.
