Took my tub out the other day to clean it up, and realized it's 150g (thought it was 175).

I plan on picking up a Rena xp4 soon, and it will house two koi (around 10 inches) one large fancy and 5 or 6 comets.
A couple of questions.
Would this be sufficient filtration?
Is there any need to silicone the plug as a precaution to avoid leakage?
I'm guessing I'll have to notch out the rim for the filter hoses, and this will be sitting on two of those "tank stands"
that I've posted pics of (re-enforced) this time. This may mean the hoses run on a bit of an angle, any concerns there?

Are you going to use that thing indoors? It is what I use in the summer in my back yard. I found that a fountain kit with a couple of sponge filters on it worked nicely outdoors but it might splash a bit too much for indoors. The fountain kit I used was rated for about 600 GPH so there was a 4x water turnover. I would expect an XP4 to be plenty of filter for that tank but if it is placed outdoors be aware that leaves will make short work of the flow through the intake on a traditional filter.

Yup. It will be set up in the basement, I'm trying to provide as best a home for these guy's as I can, the two koi (and 4 comets) are in a 55g at the moment, and I fear that is no longer ample space for them. I want them to thrive, not just survive.

Hi Namor,
I used the same tub for my Koi for a couple of winters. I had it sit on the floor of the basement on some of those interlocking foam mats to help protect the floor and some insulation from the cool floor. We used silicone to seal the plug. It was 6 years ago and I don't remember now if the plug leaked before we did that but I think it did. I used 2 filtering systems, Fluval 404 and pond pump ~1300 gal/hr drawing through a prefilter and out a box filter. Mine were kept at ~70 F and were fed well, grew ~ 1 inch a month. Good filtration is a must, Koi and goldfish are both primarily herbivores so ++ waste. I didn't notch the rims just disguised the hoses coming out with real and fake plants.
I hope this helps.

Gobies et al,
Hello :Welcome: and thank you. I think I will seal that plug, to err on the side of caution.
I hadn't thought of putting it on the floor, and it's good to hear that works.
-Was hoping to use those stands for a different project. Thanks again.

This is what my 150 gal. looked like when I finished prettying it up. It had to look decorative as it was in our family room.
Thanks for that warm welcome!

Now that's a cool tub... looks more like a permanent feature of the family room.

After much furniture shuffling, and a setback with a wonky filter, I finally managed to get this thing going.-

I had hoped to set it up on the main floor, but it wound up in the basement.
After a couple of dozen trips down the stairs (18.9L at a time), was quite happy too finally have it filled.-

:spinny:
When in doubt, add a little greenery.-

Looks great, Namor! I like the added touch of greenery. It makes a huge difference. Are they live plants? If so, I'm glad to see they are out of the reach of the koi (who I'm sure would love to dine on them).
BTW, I can't imagine hauling that much water to the basement (at 18.9L at a time)... definitely one way to get lots of exercise. :wideeyed: I think I would have tried to figure out how to rig up a hose long enough (goes to show how lazy I am).
Beautiful fish, BTW.

Are you going to set up lighting over it?

Thanks guys.
-Plastic plants, no lights (other than room), and a sore back from lugging water.
Everything is still a work in progress.::D:

Plastic plants make it look attractive, need no lighting and will not be consumed by the occupants... think you were smart there... got all bases covered.
