I was wanting to make up my own lids for some of my tanks, and don't want it to cost too much money. As an alternative to glass, I wanted to originally use plexi-glass. But after finding out how much a sheet of it costs, I have been looking into other alternatives.

I was reading on another site something about using polystyrene for making lids. I guess it doesn't warp as bad as the plexi does either. Don't know how much this stuff costs yet, but wanted to inquire with others to see if anyone else has used it. I was going to put some ribbing on the sheet to prevent it from warping. Anyone ever use this stuff? Is it as easy as plexi to work with? What kind of glue or silicon will stick to it that is aquarium friendly? Thanks guys :)

I use florescent light diffuser panels to cover many of my tanks. They're inexpensive, $5.00 for a 2 foot by 4 foot piece.

A little flimsy, but they do the job.

I have no experience with anything other than glass. However, here's a thread (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3969) with some discussion about using Lexan which might give you come ideas.

I recently replace at tank lid with glass (and yes, glass is expensive). You can get hinges from MOPS (http://www.mops.ca) for about $10.
