My co-worker sent me the info for this little wonder and I think I'm going to try it out. You purchase a little USB jack that plugs into your computer and it allows you to use your home phone or desktop for Voice over IP long distance. Unlimited long distance to anywhere in Canada or the US 24/7 for $19.95/year (the first year is included in your purchase of the MagicJack for $39.99 CAD). You can even take it with you on the road.

The Jack includes:

A phone number from one of many metropolitan areas around the country that can receive free incoming calls from around the world.
A USB optional extension cord.
Free local and long distance calling to US and Canada.
Free International calling to US/Canada numbers when traveling outside of the US.
Free Voicemail, Call Waiting & Three-way Calling.
Portable contact list and call log. They've had so many Canadians wanting it that they ran out of numbers....lol...but they'll have more by the 15th.

I have Skype but this is a much better way since I won't be tied to my PC and all of the calling features are included. So has anyone tried it yet? I'd like to hear from someone who has it before I jump in, if possible. It's been around the States for awhile now so I'm not too concerned.

You can get more info & see the CNBC report on it here (http://www.themagicjack.ca/idevaffiliate/idevaffiliate.php?id=345&keyword=CAC&custom=23). CNet TV has featured it too.

Haven't had any experience with it, (still buying CD's and using a VCR:rolleyes: ), but that does sound like a good deal. Spent a couple hours today reading user reviews (which sounded positive) and also looked at a "MJ" forum, which didn't sound as good. :Dunno:

-Sorry, guess that wasn't much help.

I have the Magic Jack, it works okay as long as you have a good internet connection. On my laptop while travelling it has to be the only thing open. If you are downloading anything it flits in and out but still we do travel alot and it is very handy to be able to set it up in a hotel and make calls home etc. sure have saved a ton of money owning it.

I have a US number (Texas) which is great as I have a girlfriend in Texas and we can make local calls to each other so she can call from work etc and not worry about a long distance charge. I am not sure I would even bother changing it to a local number if I could. Since I have a home phone.

So bottom line.... Would I buy it again! Yes, for the money and the amount of money I have saved in Long Distance both on the road and at home as well as the convenience of having a phone on the road. I basically have free long distance till 2013 for less than a hundred bucks. I can't complain, I just shut down my email when I am on a call.

Howdy stranger, great to hear from you  .

With Skype I figure the occasional echo or whatever is well worth the money saved so quality isn't a big factor for me as long as it's not ridiculous. It is certainly more practical than Skype for travellers and that's what one of my co-workers is most impressed with as his wife travels a lot. She can call the kids whenever the urge strikes and that's priceless as they grow. They can sing her a song they learned in kindergarton and tell her 182 Knock Knock jokes without anyone checking their watch  .

I have been waiting for some experience with it before I order so thanks for taking the time to post.

I was away on holiday with my husband, his Mom and a friend of hers. Roadtrip of about 10,000 kilometers. We had a great time and we used the MagicJack alot. I bought a $15 phone and we were able to call home as often as we liked and update family and friends of our trip and yes without worrying about how much time we chatted. It is priceless. In hotels though the wireless connection is not always the best but still factor that against the prohibitive costs of making long distance calls from a hotel or on a cell phone and you save money on one trip. I know I did.

I wasn't online too much while away. But I did email Jay from Oklahoma. ::D:

What I like most is the local call factor to my friend Lori in Texas. Also you can choose a number anywhere and if a local number comes available you can change to it without charge. They allow a one time free number change. I know I would buy it again in a minute.

That's fantastic! Maybe with these things becoming available, our telco's will begin to realize that we are not stuck with them and their rates so it's time to get more competitive. I would bet you anything that they've fought stuff like this tooth and nail, but since it doesn't use their phone lines, they don't have a hope.
