This fish is a sport from a spawn of regular looking parents. It shows a strange black section on the tail. The fish is healthy and happy. I won't be spawning this fish, as I don't like the look of the tail. It's interesting to see these things crop up from time to time.

What a beautiful Killifish they are, with or without black. Looks like it could be bred into a black tail with lyre colouration on the upper & lower.... like the fake lyre on an Endler.

I had this sport from a Chromaphyosemion poliaki a few years ago. They pop up occasionally, although I've only had a few over 16 years of breeding killies. I did what you're doing - kept it out of the breeding group and stuck with the wild forms.

All I can think of is playing with those genetics...lol...funny how hobbyists can differ in their objectives and what drives their addiction.

Melody,
We can differ on philosophies of fishkeeping, but at the end of the day, those differences can lead to us learning from each other. It takes work, thought and learning to keep a wild strain for many generations - it takes work, thought and learning to line breed a colour variety. As long as we keep exchanging info, we've gotten the point.

Beautiful killi Andrew.
If I had more smaller tanks I might considered getting some more different species of these guys. There was a pair of the bigger killis on the table for our Xmas draw last night. I was so tempted, but have no were at the moment to keep them. The male had to be over three inches maybe 4.

The big ones might have been Fundulopanchax sjoestedti, aka Blue Gularis. They are mean, but gorgeous looking.

Yes I think that is what they were called. The female was tiny in comparison to him. Are all the females that much smaller or was she just young?

The female was probably young. They get to be quite large too, but without the long fins of the males.

Mean? Amonst themselves or if kept with other species?

They are pretty mean to just about any other fish, but males are particularly vicious towards males of their own species. Mean enough that when they were in separate bags sitting next to each other on a tabletop, the fish were trying to attack each other!

:wideeyed: I guess that would definitely dictate only having one male in a tank.

I am assuming that if you have more than 4 males in a tank like some others types of killis this would not work with them?
