Dumb question here from the uninitiated. Are acrylic tanks suitable for a SW setup? i.e. a 5G acrylic Hex tank as a nano SW tank?

The only thing I'd worry about, Jay, would be scratching the glass with the LR or the LS, and if you get a coraline buildup on acrylic, you're going to have one **** of a time getting it off without scratches.
However it can be done - I'd never do it, I cringe just thinking about what would happen if I moved the rock a bit too close to the sides - one scrape and it's done.
If you can't tell, I sucked at operation ;)

LOL Well we have to be aware of our personal challenges after all. I sucked at Operation too, now that I recall.
Regardless, you bring up some good points to consider. Just because it can be done, doesn't mean its the ultimate route. A hex would look cool though, I must admit.

Thanks for the input. At the moment it's just an idea... the hex is currently my q-tank (always up with some resident snails in it). I just thought it would look cool as a nano reef tank... a way to dip my toe in the aspect of this hobby.

You can easily scrape off anytype of algae without scratching the tank acrylic or glass by using a credit card to scrape it off. Thats what I did when my tank was orginally plastic haha I'm doing that now too with my smaller freshwater tanks.
But live rock is very scratchy..so gotta be careful with that.
