How many of you keep Killifish? And what kinds?

I jsus started reading up on them and was thinking they wouldn't work for me as most rquire relative soft, acidic water. However, in reading, I came across the Blue Tanganyika Killifish (Lamprichthys tanganicanus) which prefers water vary hard and alkaline. Beautiful fish! Does anybody keep these? or have you ever seen them available in lfs or from private breeders. At the moment, I'm just curious as I'd have to rethink & modify my 70G somewhat to accomodate them.

Killies usually do best in a species tank. I've had a couple of species, the name escapes me on one of them but the other was good ol' Australe. They are indeed a beautiful fish and they have a loyal following. You can get eggs shipped here in the Summer, which opens the Aquabid (http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?fwkillifishe) market up to you.

There's also our local breeders at the Canadian Killifish Assoc (http://cka.org/). I may join just to meet whomever wrote the copy for their site - hilarious. There is a Vancouver Area Killie Club but their website is still being built. You can contact them by phone: (604) 858-8712 or e-mail (wastone@uniserve.com) Bill Stone. You can find Canadians through the International Killifish Assoc (http://www.killi.net/). as well.

I've been on the American Killifish (http://www.aka.org) Assoc. list for years & still find lots of stuff in there that makes for an interesting read.

might be a little late replieing, but i keep killies... not the ones you are talking about though. I have a trio of gold wonder killifish, very nice fish. Mine are not in a species tank however, they are actually in with some platies, and a trio of kribs. They are nice fish though. Very easy to care for. I keep mine in hard alkaline water, and they do absolutely fine.

That's good to know, thanks for chiming in - its never too late:smile: . The Golden Wonder Killies are quite often in stores. Watch them for aggression though - they can be pugnacious little bratts  . Any pictures?

I have an american flagfish that is a killifish and it can live in brackish hard water. However mine live with my guppies in neutral water.

i used to keep killi's, i can't remember what it's called - i lost the female shortly after i got it and thought it was crazy to keep 1 male killi in a 10g so i moved it to my communty tank and it disappeared.
He was beautiful though.
