well.. i have the go ahead to make the new fishroom.. which basically means i am making two stands to keep all my tanks in one spot while also looking alot more clean and tidy.
I have made pdfs of what the final look of the new stands will be, but i can't seem to figure out how to attach them to my message. can anyone help me out with this?
Melody

Awesome! Did she buy the "Less mess and I won't buy more tanks" line? ;)
You can attach files by clicking "Manage Attachments" below the message window as you compose the message. If you need to go back and do it, you'll probably have to click 'Edit' and then 'Go advanced' to see the option again. You can read the FAQ's (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_vb_attachment_exp lain) if that's as clear as mud...lol...the link will take you right to the attachment directions.
I'll look forward to seeing it all unfold.

Well here they are.. or at least i hope they are here.. check them out and let me know what you think. All the tanks I already have.. for the most part... so that is the reasoning for all the odd tanks

That's a lot of small tanks. Water changes must be a pain in the butt. What do you plan on stocking them with?

Jan 6th 2007, 03:10 PM
Sorry for not replying sooner, I wanted to give it some thought (and then forgot...oops  ) Rack #1 looks good. My concern only might be with rack # 2. How big are the Hex tanks? I think you probably would like a reasonably close balance between the weight on both sides. You have 900+ lbs on the right side of Rack #2 so if balanced the overall weight would be 1800+ lbs. That's a lot of weight... so you'd just have to make sure it was well reinforced. What are you using for building materials?

I avoid PDF's like the plague - my computer hates them. It locks up, gives me error messages, tells me I need updates but then won't give them to me - lots of fun....lol.

yes.. It is alot of small tanks.. Most all tanks are filled with corys in species tanks for breeding. Water changes aren't that bad actually.. I have a good routine down for that.
I work for a Structural Engineering firm and I am quite confident in the overall stability of the tank rack and load distribution. It will be built with 2x4's with intermediate members on each level as well as 1/2" plywood on the top of each level. 2x4's on edge like that have alot of load carrying capability and the max span isn't even 3'. Each rach will also be tied back to the walls behind it to give it a little extra stability as well.
I have alos made the pdfs into jpegs for melody to view.. :)

Obviously, you know what you're doing. Thanks for the details. Helpful info for anyone else considering building a fish rack. Now I know whom to consult if I want to build one. :notworthy:
When you get this started, can you post some pictures of the project (both on-going and when completed)? Would love to see it evolve.

I will take pics as it is built but the camera cable is on order so there may be a delay in the pics in the beginning. I hope to go buy the supplies early next week and have it well under way by next weekend.

Ahh yes, it's fun to finally get started on a project. :D
I am curious. Now that you will have all your tanks in one location, it would appear that all your lights, pumps, heaters, etc would be on one (or two) electrical circuits. Have you added another circuit or made any changes to accommodate the additional load?
madattiver
Jan 7th 2007, 02:39 PM
In the new place all tanks will be running off one Jehmco air pump.. and i will have one shop light per level per rack.. The electrical is going to be wired as soon as the stands are built so i know where the plug-ins will be required. That is the nice thing about working with an unfinished basement.. electrical can go anywhere you want.
I am just going through the numbers right now to see how many plug-ins i require.. checking my list.. and double checking it again.. again.. more good times.. lol

Thanks! Very impressive, at least to us unmechanically inclined individuals...lol...but I have it on good authority that it is a sound plan. :D
Let me know how that one pump plan works for you. I'm strongly considering it for my fish corner, which is as close as I get to a fish room...lol. I ran out of outlets a long time ago. Now I just have major fire hazards.

there was some progress made this weekend in the fishroom.. did some mudding and sanding to prep drywall for painting.. and also have all the pieces for the first rack complete and I just have to paint them and bolt them together.. Painting happens tonight. and hopefully they go together at some point this week. Second rack hopefully is built this coming weekend.
I do have some pictures taken, but they are on another computer and will follow possibly this evening or tomorrow. depending on how much free time I have.. painting racks and walls tonight

Racks look good, forgot to ask, what's the overall height going to be ?
My first rack is about six feet high at the top of the tanks, overall works fine, except when trying to catch fish. Takes some reaching to get to the back of tanks.

Jan 16th 2007, 07:29 AM
Well.. I do not have pics yet.. I spent all evening priming the stand for painting.. was actually up until 11:30 trying to get it all finished.
Blaine, the top rack sits at 5'-0" off the ground.. so just high enough that I can see the corys swimming in the bottom of the tank. I also have a stool for catching fish on that top level.
You guys will also be happy to know that my USB cable has arrived for the digital cam, so many more pics to follow in the coming weeks.
Tonight.. back to sanding and mudding the walls of the basement.. and hopefully get a coat of primer on the drywall. I have to kick this into high gear this week as I would really like to start moving fish over as soon as possible.

sorry.. again.. I have been slacking on posting pics on this.. so for now, i wll tell you the progress.
the first stand is finally completed the painting process and is a go for being assembled this evening. The only thing i am missing is the flip up lids on the stand, and will probably not come until all the tanks are in place and i know exactly how big they need to be.

finally some pics for everyone... stary it off slow..
first we made the square frame for the platform using 90 degree angle clamps
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/madattiver/fishroom/fishstand01.jpg
then we added the cross peices..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/madattiver/fishroom/fishstand02.jpg
and repeated that another two times to get all the platforms.. also started pre-drilling holes in the verts.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/madattiver/fishroom/fishstand03.jpg
next we screwed down the plywood to the top of the frames...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/madattiver/fishroom/fishstand04.jpg
and now began the painting.. I primed all the wood and left the underneith white for better light reflection.. the remainder was kept black.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/madattiver/fishroom/fishstand05.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/madattiver/fishroom/fishstand07.jpg
and here is the top frame with the light installed.

lights will be installed under each platform level.
and that's it for now...

How do you do water change for the bottom row? I usually have a hard time getting water to syphon out from tanks too close to ground. Really solid built looking racks.
madattiver
Jan 24th 2007, 03:06 PM
well the bottom tanks are 10-11" off the ground and can be syphoned straight to the floor drain. It won't be a gushing flow of water, but still very doable. I had to get that third row of tanks in there somehow.. so there was some sacrifice here and there to make it work.
how close to the ground are your tanks???
Edgezilla
Jan 24th 2007, 08:08 PM
When I had the tank 4" off the ground, water change was a pain to do. I have the rack so the bottom of the tank is above the bucket now.
What are the dimension of the racks?

Nice fishies - put those hifins on my trade list...lol...you know me and elaborate finnage. I love the Longfin Bronze - can't wait until I get those babies breeding.
Looks like you're making great progress! I expect all sorts of design contracts out of these growing fishrooms - gotta have a website if you want to rule the Canadian fish-keeping world.;)

well this stand building thing actually was alot easier then antisipated.. but then again, everything is easier when you have an extra set of hands to help out. I hope to have all the tanks moved and set up by the weekend.. so keep your fingers crossed that I can keep that schedule

I got ambitious tonight and put together the second stand.. this stand is mostly for fry raising as it will have five 5 gal tanks and three 2.5 gal tanks on the middle rack, two 20 longs on the bottom and a mix of 10's and a 15 on the top.
here is a very bad picture of tonights final product and I will get more pics once it is full of tanks.

ya.. I kind of did get busy.. went down after work to wire some lights up.. and some 6 hours later a tank stand was assembled, air valves were drilled and installed... and the rack was moved into place with a few tanks put in place.
I called my freind to ask if he could help with the assembly and he told me he couldn't come until wednesday.. that just wouldn't do... and I figured I could handle it all, it just might take me a bit longer then with an extra set of hands.
anyways.. I will move a few tanks over tonight after work and keep at it every evening after work... hopefully this is done sooner then later so I can get back to enjoying my fish.

Well after a long... busy weekend I have all tanks but one moved over.. the second stand has all the tanks that go on it here, but I still have to fill a few of them..
Also moved over my 25 gal planted tank.. it was so badly overgrown with javamoss the tank was a giant green cube.. I took almost all the javamoss out and am dispursing it throughout my cory tanks to give them another option for a spawning site. The tank looks horrible, but need time to grow and it woll look half decent again.
Here is what the second stand looks like now, minus the flip up panels on the front.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/madattiver/fishroom/fishstand40.jpg
and the shellie tank on that stand...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/madattiver/fishroom/Fish%20Tanks/fishstand42.jpg
and my planted tank... that again.. looks horrible at the moment...

it is 11:00 pm here now.. and I think the weekend is officially over and I can finally go to bed. I will work mor throughout the week and hope to get a few more pics for you all.

I can't wait to get back into the livebearer swing.. it has been too long since I kept a bunch of cool livebearers.. and now I have alot of extra room with the new stands.. I actually have empty tanks at the moment which I have spread some fish around to just to make them not look empty..
p.s.
those tanks will soon be full of livebearers.. :D

Be thankful you're a couple of provinces away... Melody has to rely on the internet or the mail to torment you. I'm just over the bridge! It's a good thing she doesn't drive!... yet!:wideeyed:
As for the livebearers, (not the human kind Melody:FishOnDaHead: ), it's great fun breeding them. I've never bred anything else. That of course could change now that I have Gouramis. (Then of course I'll be picking everyone's brain for advice.)
Enjoy your new setup. I've extremely envious of you having the place to be able to set up those tank racks.

the front panels finally started to go onto the stands last night. I bought most of the material after work and did a few panels before I had to go out for the evening. I hope to get the bulk of it completed this evening and will follow up with some pics.
The panels are constructed with black coroplast sheets of plastic, and the hinge is actually black duct tape.. ;)

You've really maximized the amount of tank space in your fishroom, I'd be happy spending many evenings tending to my finny friends with that set-up.
