View Full Version : Mini review: Zoo Med Mag Clip magnetic "suction cups"

I bought several sets of these to replace regular suction cups that had become brittle on canister filter intakes and outputs. The package comes with one set of magnets, and sets of clips sized for heaters, filter tubes and airline. The clips screw into one half of the magnet. Initially, I was a little dissapointed that only a single set of magnets was included in the package. I thought that it would contain two magnets, as there are two clips for each size (next time I'll look at the description a little more thoroughly ;) )

Installing the clips into the magnet is easy. The clips fit a little loose around the filter tubes I wanted to secure, but it proved to be adequate. The magnets hold the tubing firmly, but it's still easy to adjust the position of clip. I found that a single clip/magnet combo holds a filter tube fine (typically canister filter tubes are held by two suction cups each) All in all I'm satisfied so far with the product. It's a little pricey at about $5 per package. Compare genuine Eheim suction cups at about $6 for a set of two. I get several years out of them before they fail. I'm hoping the magnetic ones won't really need to be replaced. I'll update the review in a few months when I've had them longer.

Certainly looks like a nifty idea, thanks for the review! I have a horrible time with heaters so I may give it a whirl for that. How difficult would it be to rig up something similar as a DIY?

I don't know about the DIY angle. I think you would have to seal the magnet that is in the water very well. Probably doable for the clever and determined.

I'm not one of those by a long shot...lol...a simple concept were it not for those pesky details! They do make waterproof magnets for cars & whatnot, but I'll let someone explore that who is more handy than I am.

I read just today that you could DIY something similar with pieces from a magnetic checkers set...

Now that I would never have thought of. The mini checkers always have the magnets but they're pretty small. I'm sure a big craft or hardware store somewhere has the perfect answer.

Anyone looking for magnets for a project can buy circular earth magnets (http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page.aspx?c=2&p=32065&cat=3,42363,42348&ap=1) individually in a range of sizes from 1/4 in - 1 inch in diameter at Lee Valley Tools. And shipping is free within Canada and the US for orders placed between December 23rd and January 4th. ::D:

The Lee Valley ones are great. We use them to hold calendars and the kids artwork to magnetic boards and such.

Where would the mechanically challenged like me be without creative thinkers like you people? lol That's great! I'll look forward to the pictorial in the DIY section.

I bought mine mail order from Pets and Ponds (http://www.petsandponds.com/en/aquarium-supplies/c153977/p17066108.html). My two sets are working great.

As I fought with my existing suction cups for my heater today while re-aquascaping my tank, I remembered these and seriously think I'm going to give them a try. Just wondering how they've held up long term, Andrew?

Is anyone else using these?

I have been using these for quite some time, no complaints & I find the hold up well.

They are holding up well. I don't even know they are there.

Thanks for the feedback. I think they're going to be on my list to purchase next trip to the fish store.

I still haven't purchased any because for some reason I don't think of them when I'm at the store. However, I have another question. How sturdy are the plastic clips themselves. That's what seems to be breaking first on the regular replacement suction-cup type clips. (They break even before the suction cup stops being sticky.:frown: )

I don't want to spend a lot on these mag ones only to find the plastic clips break.
