Although I have never posted in this section before I am compelled to stick my head in long enough to ask one question that has had me stumped for a day or two.

Any break in period during an initial set up would require time to build up sufficient colonies of nitribacters ands nitrasomers {spell check won't help me there}

Are these identical organisms that you would find in a fresh water environment ?
Can fresh water "cross" over and a"dress" the needs of salty's?
If no ---then so be it.

If yes, could I not tug a filter out of a tropical tank and plug it directly into a saltwater set up?

All different organisms I believe, although some are closely related. Full marine conditions would kill off freshwater organisms I should think.

That said, I'm no marine expert or cross dresser by a long shot... although I will wear men's wool socks if my feet are cold - does that count? I'd hate to give it up, it's a pretty 'hot' look :rolleyes: .

As I understand, and I could be way off, different bacteria are required for every ~.002 increase in salinity. Freshwater would be 1.000 and marine <1.022.

IMO there is nothing gained by trying to seed a marine tank with filter material from a freshwater set up.

I am not experienced in marine, but have brackish.

Hopefully a marine person will chime in and confirm or deny the info.

Yes, saltwater bacteria are a completely different range of species from freshwater bacteria... Seeding a SW tank with FW filter media won't help to speed up the cycle.
Most salties tend to cycle with live rock, anyhow. You need to give the rock time to cure, so you may as well use it to kickstart the cycle. ;)
