View Full Version : A good week for maternity...

Not only do I have molly fry, it also turns out that my clownfish have laid eggs- and I missed it! They've been there for over a week, and I only noticed them today, because they've changed colour. You can see their itty-bitty little eyes now, so hatching will take place within the next 24 hours. :err:
I don't expect any of the fry to survive, but you never know...
I'll try to keep everyone posted. Unfortunately, my camera isn't cooperating with me ATM, and Emma (the female clown) attacks the glass if I spend too much time close up, so I don't want to stress them.

Spectacular!! From what I understand there are only a few species out there that will
spawn in the home aquarium. Let me be the first to congratulate you on this monumental accomplishment !:notworthy:
Just out of curiosity what would prevent fry survival?

Wow! You're sure doing something right! It's an early Spring at Osprey's house.
That's a good question again Jewels and I'm curious too  .

Clownfish fry are itty-bitty teeny tiny when born- the size of an automatic pencil lead tip... so almost everything and anything in the tank will eat them. Basically, they're coral food... although I suspect my mandarin dragonet will have a field day, as well.
I might try raising them sometime this summer, when uni is finished with... pull them into a QT tank just before they hatch, and culture rotifers to feed them. Now that my clowns have laid eggs, they should keep laying them... about once a month.::D:

Is this done often? It sounds like a fun breeding project.

Congrats on the clownfish eggs... that's fantastic. Hatching withing the next 24 hours? Are you going to be able to get anything done during that time or will you be glued to the tank?

They hatched while I was sleeping that night. :)
More news- I brought a Flame Angel home with me yesterday. He's been kept in captivity for over a year- absolutely demolished the previous owner's Small Polyp Stony corals. I don't keep SPS, so I purchased him and brought him home. Trying to decide on a name... leaning towards Pyro.
He's a very deep red colour for the species, so I think he must be from Hawaii originally. Seems to be settling in very well; he can cross the entire length of the tank without ever coming out of the rockwork!

What? You didn't stay up all night waiting.? We'll be eagerly waiting to see how they do.
As for the flame angel... he sounds beautiful. Would love to see a pic of him.

He's obviously pretty smart too.

One person's devil is another's angel I guess  . I think some pictures of those tanks of yours in general are in order. Good luck with the new fish, born or purchased!

Hi Osprey :)
My pair of Ocellaris clowns have been spawning pretty regularly in one corner of my tank for a while now. I agree with you that most baby marine creatures seem to enter the plankton cycle in early development and never seem to get past that stage, either being fed on, caught in impeller sheer or not finding the right food to survive.
If you decided to try rearing them in separate tank I would love to follow your progress. It seems like and interesting side project and if I didn't have two other tanks tanks on the go right now I would try it.

My problem right now is school-lol!
My sister has passed mere 'tolerance' and has now started actively helping me with my tank. Thank heavens- I'd be in serious trouble otherwise, it's hard to keep up with all the water chanes and equipment cleaning on a 120g!
I might give it a try over the summer... hopefully I'd have a bit more luck in photobraphy if I had a smaller tank to take pictures in.
