Guess, what I discovered in my tank today?! Some molly fry:red_dance:... not sure if they're Green Sailfin Lyretails (too tiny to tell) but they are Green. These are my first success with breeding mollies. However I might not be able to take credit, mama might have been pregnant when I got her. I'm amazed how much bigger the babies are than platy fry (who aren't much more than eyeballs with a tail ) .

At least some have escaped the hungry mouths in the 70G but I can't tell how many there are because it is well planted.

Congrat's! I'm sure they're Green Lyres - she'll be spitting out fry from her last pure mating for months.

When my mollies were breeding their fry were really big too. Much much bigger than guppies. :) congrats on the new babies!

Thanks! I did water changes this morning. The adult fish in the tank always retreat into a corner and hide in the plants (it's also by the heater so they can stay warm is the water added isn't quite as warm as the existing tank water). They always stay hidden for a while after I finish... they want to be sure I'm done with invading their home...lol. This gives the fry in the tank the opportunity to swim free in open water without fear of predatory mouths of the bigger fish. So I now know I have at least 4 baby mollies (that's how many were brave enough to come out and swim around with the platy fry).

Their cousins, Limias, have big babies too. Charles' Mollies have a lot of wild blood in them as he breeds for size, dorsal, cold tolerance, etc. His Green Mollies are the real deal - wild Green Molly lines, and it was them that were brought into the Lyre Sailfin domestic strain. That considered, they're probably a tad bigger at birth than a domestic Molly. However, as Mix says, Mollies have larger fry anyway as a rule.

You'll have to make sure you save some - you have a waiting list already....lol. Strangely enough, Mollies aren't big fry eaters. The more wild they are, the less inclined they are to eat fry. Your munchers are almost certainly the Platy's, piglets that they are.

I'm sure you're right, Melody, about my platys snacking on the fry (they tend to munch on their own fry). However, good news! There are more little mollies than I first thought... just now I counted 6:D ... and there may be more still hiding <keeping fingers crossed>

AHHH, the thrill of the first fry.

They're a lot of fun to watch as they grow.

Congrats
