Cool. How big is he? And what do you feed him?

He looks very innocent and nice, for a Bichir.

The funny thing is he loves having his pics taken, he swims over every time.

He's about 5" long. He pretty much eats whatever I stick in there, dried and frozen bloodworms, shrimp, bottom feeder tablets, prawns.

I know nothing about them. Do they tend to be nasty? Cause he looks harmless from that angle.

He obviously enjoys human interaction. Of course, human presence often means 'more food', so how can he resist?

LOL that's true, how could he resist.

It gets along with the others just fine...it's always doing it's own thing, minding it's business

I'm glad to hear he's working out with other fish in the tank. What other occupants do you have in there?

Well, there's the fire eels, a rapheal catfish, a baby pleco, and white tetra ( I'm babysitting).
My brother is taking one of the fire eels, that will make more space.

I've read that they will eat what can fit in their mouth, I haven't had trouble, but I don't have neons or anything that small in there.

Had one that was about 6-7" long a while back that was killed by an oscar that I rescued to rehome. He was in there with that oscar for a while before it went bad.

Before that I had that bichir in with an EBJD, JD, and 2 other oscars.
All of these were only half grown at the time. But I had to shut that tank down, so I moved the bichir in with the fire eels and the rescued oscar.

It's a personality thing with the oscars, some work and dome don't.

Glad to hear he's showing no interest in the other fish. I'm surprised he hasn't bothered the baby pleco but maybe because plecos tend to stay near the bottom or are latched onto the glass, it doesn't catch his eye (or the dinner your provide is much more appealing, requiring no effort:wink: ).

That was good of you to have rescued the oscar... too bad things went sideways and you ended up losing a fish.

That's a really nice bichir. I had a very lucky opportunity to care for my friends bichirs and other fish when he was away during christmas. They ate live feeders, bloodworms, crickets, earthworms, and whatever else he pretty much throws in. I think you have to be careful keeping them with fish with large mouths, since they are long and skinny like a snake, and many oscars seem to try and eat anything they THINK will fit in their mouths  I lost many fish to my oscars bellies.

Yea, oscars can be gluttens.

I do know of someone who has a couple of big oscars who can put new 1" cichlids in his tank and the oscars don't even put the chase on them.
Personality thing I guess. But then again, his tank is 800 gallons:twitcy:

:err:800 gallons, he must have a really big house. I think in a tank that size, the 1" fish should be able to hide well enough. In a 120, not so much
