I keep posting pics of the occupants of my 70G but never the tank. It's the only tank worth a picture... my others are fry & snail & Q-tanks... no aesthetics there.
So I took a picture of the 70G today. Plants need to grow in more but here it is:

They're hiding. I ought to take a picture at feeding time... then you'll be telling me I'm overstocked.

What are those tall grassy plants in your tank? They are nice. I had something similiar but it died :(

The tall grassy plants are Vallisneria. I got them from mykiss when I was first setting up my tank last summer. The ones he gave me were huge... some about 2 1/2 feet long!:swoon: I got ten of them. They've done really well. I keep my tank at 80 degrees, have fairly hard water and have only one 25w fluorescent light, and I have floating plants as well which reduce the amount of light they get.

If you were thinking about trying them again, maybe contact mykiss to see if he has any and inquire as to whether or not he figures they'd do OK, given your water parameters and lighting. He was really helpful when I was choosing plants.

Nice tank Jay, watch out for that Val though, gotta stay on top of it. I got the same stuff from Mykiss and it has pretty much taken over my tank!

One idea I'm toying with is trying to keep freshwater sponge, I think it would grow really well with particle food in a fry tank, keeping the pollution down and discouraging hydra.

I found it for sale here but their close-up picture is hideous

What I'm hoping it would look like:

Pretty cool if you ask me!

Looks cool. I didn't realize there were such things as freshwater sponges. I'd like to check it out. If you get any further info let me know.

I also have to get to adding some plants to my fry tank but of course the dilemma is the marisa snails are in there too and they are plant eaters (so most plants are part of their dinner menu). :Think:I wonder how soft the sponge is and if they'd eat it. Off to see what info I can find.

It goes to show my lack of knowledge. I was thinking 'plant' but sponges are critters. I'm still researching. I will post links to informative articles I find in the thread: Sponges - Marine & Freshwater (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/showthread.php?t=567). Please feel free to add any links there which you find.

As for the Val I guess it keeps you busy weeding. Maybe you could share some with mixixe. ;)

I like the look of it in the tank and more importantly my fish love it as it provides great hiding places. Unless it multiplies 10 fold, I'm not concerned.

My fish love it too:D I couldn't catch my last two L.nigrofasciata juveniles because they learned to hide in the val, so I netted just under 20. They are headed to Vancouver this coming weekend. Wish I coulda caught a nice round number but such is life....

Mixixe is most welcome to as much val as wanted. I was going post as much but I only had enough time to catch fish this trip and it will be a couple more weeks 'til I can dig up the plants and I'll have to ship by mail as opposed to Soggy-express-mazda-courier...

If that makes little sense, its because my tanks are in two different locations an hour and a half apart...

Dibs on the Val! LOL Mr. SB, make a note for my box. ;) Speaking of which, are you coming to visit me this weekend?

As for freshwater sponges, I have been doing this fish thing for longer than I've admitted to being alive, and I had no idea they existed either...lol. Now I want some, so make it work ok?

Damnit! I didn't see page two. Alright, Mix got dibs on the Val, but when hers multiplies I'm getting it!;)

Apparently people share with me far too much and I've become spoiled and demanding :wideeyed: lol.
