I noticed today that they are actually chewing holes in it! Is this likely to harm them? I just moved them to a QT tank yesterday as I have callamanus worms in their usual tank. One wouldn't think they were starving, plenty of food in there for them....

Crazy snails, they eat everything! It explains who is chewing my on sponge filter, I thought it was my queen arabesque's! Wish I could help more with an answer.

I've heard of canas doing that.
What type of tylos are they?

Not that this is really of any help but maybe they munch on it because of tiny trapped food particles in the sponge. (their version of pizza with toppings   ) I can't imagine that sponge would be terribly digestable but maybe it provides roughage. :Dunno:

I have several different species, yellows, white spotted, yellow spotted and a couple of yellow antenna. They must be after the food particles. And tp think of all the time I spent stressing over what to feed them. I could've just chucked a few old sponges in!:twitcy:

We had 3 huge canas at one time, or should say my son had them, and they regularly shredded the sponges on the filter intake.
I'm pretty sure they didn't actually eat the sponge, since there were all sorts of floating cleaned pieces of sponge in the tank:err: . Silly things.
Eventually we took the sponges off the intake and would often find the snails sitting in the filter, an Aquaclear, having an easy meal.

silly but smart snails. To them, I guess the sponge on the intake was simply a lock on a door... so, remove the lock and gain access to the pantry.

I actually had a fish that would rip chunks off the sponge filter in his tank. I don't know if he was bored or just hungry

Probably simply annoyed with you for burying so many tasty morsels in a sponge.

Took a little while to find it, but here is what my Canas did to their sponge filter.

No, there were no bits of filter hanging around. They just devoured it.

 I wonder what sponge tastes like? (and no I'm not planning on tasting one. :twitcy: )... to a Cana it must be like chips... you keep eating until they're all gone.

:Dinner: I guess it's like a feast to the snails. I however did find some bits of sponge that my gravel vac picked up, I think my fish was just ticked off with me for putting him by himself, just so that he couldn't harrass anymore fish. He got bored obviously

Blaine, that is one tasty sponge filter obviously!! I was also reading that ramshorns will eat sponge filters (don't know what family the cana belong to).
