i read the brochure, do you have to go to everything or can you just go to the auction, is it 75.00 to get in?

They usually group everything but you can contact them. If I manage to get there I won't bother with some of the speakers, but I'll participate in the rest and will still think it's a bargain.

It's important to support these endeavors so please remember to bring fish donations for the auction.

As Katalyst said, everyone is welcome to attend. You do not have to be a member of any club.

FULL CONVENTION TICKET $75.00
(This includes speakers and a banquet -maybe the brunch as well, I can't recall what was said at the last meeting)

SPEAKERS (5) ONLY $50.00

CHILDREN (16YRS & UNDER) $30.00

If you only want to attend the auction, that's free. But I highly recommend going to the convention as well.

It sounds to me like a better place to find a CAC person than even the ALA convention next year. I really wish that my passport was up to date and I could come and meet you all there. I must get my Canadian passport renewed before next year's ALA convention so that I can visit across the border if the occasion presents itself. Meanwhile, it would make a trip to something like CAOAC much easier for me to do. I would hope that a membership in FAAS would be regarded as a reasonable set of credentials for someone like me to attend.

1:30–2:45pm Gary Lange "Collecting in New Guinea"
3:00–4:15 Bob Fenner talk on "Algae Can Be Your Friend"
4:30pm – 5:45 Heiko Bleher talk on Geophagus And Dwarf cichlids
Forwell Hall 6:30 pm Bar Opens
7-8:30 pm Dinner
8:30–9:45 pm Rein Breitmaier on his "Mediterranean Trip"
10:00 pm – ? Bob Fenner Light and Lively – "Candiru Catfishes, The Only Vertebrate Parasites of Man"

Also, I’m attaching a photo of the plaque that the North American Discus Association sent for the CAOAC’s discus class in the show. It’s a wonderful Blue Diamond discus on the award. I personally think it’s something to try for as an award at the show!

Lisachromis
May 5th 2009, 05:37 PM
That's sort of tough to say... Have you been to any fish auctions before? I can maybe make a comparison better than to say it's "big". I imagine that there 'may' be 150-200 people sitting in the crowd.

Be sure to check with the airlines about liquid in your luggage. The airlines lowered their baggage measurement/weight limits not too long ago as well, so checking that out would be a good idea. You can always ship them back to yourself if worse comes to worse.

Check the sofa - there's always money in the sofa.

Sadly my room with be filled with various types of slate, marble & granite. And a freezer full of Stacies fish food. So if get hungry I know where to go! lol

As Melody said, check with the airlines. I know that more and more of them are allowing 2 suitcases but only one is free. They charge for the second bag.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm pretty experienced at flying with fish(not flying fish) so I should be good. Having said that, this is the person who got kicked off Air Canada but managed to cry her way on to United so I could bring back my fish from San Francisco. I'm only there for 2 nights so I'll have lots of room and will be staying with the bettas, wine and chocolate girls!!

Zenin graciously shared his pictures with me for a Livebearer feature in the upcoming ALA (http://www.livebearers.org) Livebearers publication, which should be in mailboxes directly.

I wish people in shows would clean the glass/plastic on their containers so pictures could be taken. I really, really, REALLY wish that, having spent two days cleaning them up :twitcy: . Once the marks were gone though, the shots were easy to work with. I was able to put together a series of photo's, along with a brief blurb about the convention and the CAOAC graphic itself features the winning Molly.

I had already submitted by the time I heard back from the CAOAC, but I found the Livebearer winners and basic info on the website so we got it in there. We were going to delay it due to space issues but an article was split into a 2-parter so it's in this one. It was a lot of fun to shine a spotlight on some Canadian Livebearers and the ALA has lots of Canadian members. It doesn't much matter where they come from anyway - we always enjoy pictures.
