View Full Version : Need Help, Panda/Habrosus Cories Laid Eggs

I have 6 cories in a 10gallon tank; 3 pandas and 3 habrosus. I put them in their own tank on Fri morning and this morning (Sun) I found eggs stuck to the side of the fish tank and one on top of a purple Melody snail ...:err:

I am clueless as what to do now ... will somebody please help. My friend is in the same situation as well ... :swoon:

Cheers from clueless Marge

Do you have your Nerites in that tank? They like to lay eggs on other snail shells. I guess they want to be sure the kids to leave the nest.

I would remove the eggs to a breeder net or a small tank. A tank would be preferrable as the babies will feel more secure with the cover you can provide them with in a tank, and it would be more stressful to move them later. If you need a small tank, give me a shout.

Cory's will just as often eat their eggs as not. I have never bred the Habrosus but I've bred Pandas and we also have other Cory breeders here who I'm sure will be glad to help you through it.

You're a VAHC member aren't you? They have an awesome book in their library (http://www.fishopolis.com/vahc/newsletter_library.cfm) about Cory breeding by the legendary Ian Fuller (http://corydorasworld.com/books/breeding_corydoradinae_catfish) available for members to borrow. Borrowing just one of their books pays for your membership and they have a very impressive collection.

I did put in a breeder net into the 10 gallon tank; did some reading on Planetcatfish to see what I can do in the meantime and he is one of the moderator at the catfish forum there.

I have 5 eggs, by the size of them; they probably are Panda Cory eggs; ... shall see what happens next ... will keep you updated.

Cheers n thanks for the links.

You're certainly in good hands on Planet Catfish. I'll look forward to hearing how it goes. Congrat's!

congrats

If they do hatch, you will need microworm and bbs ready. You will have to feed them microworm when they are free swimming (approx 3 days) At the end of 10 days (7 day free swimming) begin mixing live bbs and microworm to the food source.

Around 14 days you can drop the microworm and go with pure bbs. around 21 days you can slowly introduce dry food to the bbs feeding.

Give or take 5 weeks. you can start alternating between dry food and bbs. Don't have to mixed them anymore. shoudl be feeding no less than 4 times a day for the first 2 months.

congrats on the spawn.. Panda's will eat their own eggs, habrosus won't... but since you have both in the tank, it was a good decision to remove them.

I used to do the microworm thing with my fry way back when, but then realized most cory fry will go straight to freshly hatched bbs after about 4-7 days, precicely when their yolk sac is used up. Just make sure you do not put any unhatched eggs in with them as that can cause a problem with their digestive track and you could loose a bunch of them. Lastly, add some snails to the fry container/tank as they will eat uneaten food so it won't spoil..

Please keep us posted, and once again, congrats on the spawn!!!!

Marge, speak to Mr. Mykiss - last I heard he'd sell frozen BBS. He does a fine job at it - my critters have been scarfing it down for months. You don't want to know what I was paying for commercial frozen BBS :wideeyed: , although that was 'enriched'. I was unriched by the time I bought enough of it though...lol.

Nice to have such experienced breeders here :D .

congrats on the spawn.. Panda's will eat their own eggs, habrosus won't... but since you have both in the tank, it was a good decision to remove them.

The eggs are still in the tank but in a breeder net (all by themselves). I am not sure if I would need to put them in a separate container or not.

I have frozen BBS, will that do? I have a lot of them actually; if this is sufficient enough, then I will utilise these within the time period that you mentioned above then. Snails, I have plentiful, I have snails around to feed my pea puffers, no problems there either.

Please keep us posted, and once again, congrats on the spawn!!!!

I will update as much as I can.

Again, cheers for the speedy replies.

If the frozen BBS doesn't work, then I will contact mykiss then. Until then, there isn't anything I can do right now. The eggs (all 5 of them) are still nicely transparent.

The Japonica shrimps has taken a nice interest at the net and has been clinging on and eating whatever it is that they find there; thus the net so far is clean and cleaner ... :notworthy:

This morning (after 8.5 hours of blackout) I found 6 more eggs, they are now all in the same breeding net ... what am I supposed to do now?

Will it be okay for all of them to be in the same net or not?

Cheers

you should be fine.. they were all laid relitively close to each other in the timeline.. just wouldn't want too much difference in fry sizes as the smaller ones would have a hard time competeing for food.

also, i am not really fond of the breeding net for cory fry.. since they are bottom feeders i found that mos of the food just fell through the netting.. with a breeder trap thingy with a solid bottom if gave them more time to find the food.

Oh dear, does that mean I have to go out and buy stuff .... in this black icy roads weather? lol

I will see then, hubby will not be pleased ...

Thanks for the advise .... will have to see if I have empty buckets and air filter or not ...

don't go out today.. it is just something to think about down the road as they will most likely keep spawning on a regular basis for you.. try this out for you.. see how it works.. I just noticed betetr growth rates when there was a solid bottom in those things.

Dejavous.... didn't I tell you that a tank would be preferrable to a net? Don't you ever listen to me? Am I invisible? What about me and MY needs?

I also told you that I have small tanks if you need one, brattycakes. ;) Some are even up for trade at this precise moment. I was after fishies, but I might be convinced to take another one of your tankloads of Java Moss since half of the other stuff died on me. :(

I have an empty 2.5 gallon tank available Mel, no worries there, I also set up a 2 liter bucket and has an air stone running in it right now, just to see how it goes ....

Hehehe ... I will DEFINITELY call when I have the moss for you.

I think mine are around 4G's. Come get them when/if you need them, the moss can come later - we don't stand on ceremony around here ;) .

javamoss in with the fry definately can help too.. all sorts of microscopic goodies within there for them to snack on

amber2461
Jan 13th 2007, 10:47 PM
All 5 hatched !!!!! They are in a floating container of their own in the tank itself, they do eat the microworm, I have done a 50% daily water change, they seem fine ... will update later on this.

Java moss eh? I have tons of them in my 108 gallon; will get some out later then ... but not today, need to cook lunch for tomorrow; need to iron , etc etc ....

Cheers

Jan 14th 2007, 01:45 PM
Yes they do, don't they? I found some the first time quite by accident when I drained a tank and it took me awhile to figure out just what they were. It was only because they liked the bottom so much that I finally figured it out. It will be fun to see what they turn out to be. Do you know at what age they each begin to get their distinctive markings?

congrats on getting them to hatch.. now the fun begins in raising them.. best of luck with that and please do keep us posted on how you make out with them

amber2461
Jan 16th 2007, 11:03 PM
The first batch was 5 eggs; all hatched. The second bath was 9 eggs, 2 hatched, the other 7 had fungus on it.

The third batch had 2 eggs .... so far I have 7 free swimming fry. They seem to be doing well ... the only time I can check on them is when I am off work ... they finished off whatever microworm I put in the container; I still keep up with the 50% daily water change.

Cheers
