OMG.....There's a Blizzard out there right now LOL......
We lost power for only about 10mins around 3pm after a massive gust of wind and then it came back on, then it seemed to calm right down and now, I just looked outside about 5 mins ago to see rain with a few flakes and then all of a sudden it's as if the sky opened up, it's literally blizzarding out there.....crazy stuff!

The wind was incredible earlier. I can't recall ever having seen so many wind storms here. No power outages here (not even flickering lights this time) and the snow has stopped... for now.

I was in West Vancouver at 3:30 staring out the window of a house ontop of a hill and the windows were rumbling and the fireplace doors kepting opening and shutting with lights flickering all over the place! creepy!!!

More snow is in the forecast. Of course, you realize our members outside of the Vancouver area and sitting back chuckling to themselves. I'm sure we're all labeled as wimps:laugh: . Maybe we should ask them what kind of weather they're having.

I've had the fireplace on all day practically. It makes it too warm really and I get lazy when that happens. I did manage to get a lasagne in the oven. The kid & I ate by the fireplace - he likes it when its on. Won't be long and he'll kick me out so he can sit there with his girlfriend of the moment no doubt  , but they're not getting my lasagne.... although the garlic bread might keep them behaving themselves....lol.
Let's see... we have Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan here for starters - how's the weather there?

I almost wish we hadn't taken down all the X-mas stuff already....feels like X-mas all over again.
Hubby left for work about 10mins ago, just called me to give me the angry and frustrated traffic report.....roads are bad and likely will only get worse with the impending big freeze on its way.
Hopefully everyone will get to work safely, it's days like this I'm thankful that I got to stay home hehe.

It is actually a severe blizzard here right now.. winds exceeding 60 km/hr.. it took me two attempts to get to work this morning. The first try i gave up when i came to the first intersection and i couldn't see accross the street.

Ya I guess compared to the other provinces getting hit by this storm two fold, we don't have much to complain about, we have family in Alberta and they're having major issues as well....I had wanted to go to Ontario for X-mas, they were having such lovely weather out there, now they're in the same boat as the rest of Canada lol.
Looking out my window, the flakes are the size of saucers and the wind, albeit not as strong as yours is still throwing the snow around in different directions making it look rather horrible out there lol. I don't really mind the snow so much when it falls, what I really dislike is the aftermath of it all.
I'm thinking these past few months will definitely end up in the history books.....I have a feeling it's not even close to being over yet either:no:

Still snowing steadily. As a bus driver, this is the sort of day I really don't look forward to going to work. According to the traffic reports, I gather a number of hills are closed and busses are being rerouted. It's supposed to warm up a little this afternoon with everything turning to slush and then freeze again tonight. So it's going to be lots of fun working tonight with all that ice and snow! (Melody, I envy you sitting by the fireplace.)

I actually am stuck at work and may have to stay the night.. with the current weather and the fact that there is only a certain number of bridges to cross.. we ended up sitting in our car for an hour and a half and we made it approx 5 blocks... and we were running out of gas.. so this was the best option.. sad that that is the best option.. but I guess better then running out of gas or not making it home because of the weather

And here we are on the west coast complaining. It's got to be really bad when traffic come to a grinding halt in Saskatoon!:wideeyed: Staying a work doesn't exactly sound like the most comfortable situation but better to be safe.

someone was just on the radio that was ahead of us and has only made it 3 more blocks in the last hour and a half since we gave up and came to my work. So, I am glad to be sitting here instead of still in the car.. Definatley would have run out of gas by now

I've been getting a kick out of how careful they are to add that Global warming has nothing to do with it. Almost every single weather story has somebody denying it. Methinks the officials doth protest too much...

Savagely windy here yesterday, but warm, so all the snowbanks melted enough to make the roads and sidewalks wet. Then last night freezing rain and the temp plunged so everything turned into skating rinks. But I'm not complaining...running out of gas in a blizzard could be the end of you!
Kamloops also seems to take pride in staying right on top of the road conditions, we haven't had a stay-at-home day yet.

A foot? I'm thinkin' around 8" here, but yeah, I heard 2-4 cm too. I'm quite enjoying it actually - nowhere to go. I like the big flakes at night. As I've always said, that's the kind of snowfall that a woman should be kissed under <sigh>.
But hey, the cat licked me, and that comes with no obligations or expectations... 'cept Tuna Juice. ;)
I was out playing earlier, filming the young men doing 'stunts' on their bikes in the snow. They thought themselves to be very cool. They're too old to 'play' in the snow after all, so we must call it 'stunts'.
I told them they were frolicking. They made me go home then.

I parked my car at the depot in PoCo shortly before 4 p.m. and found it encrusted with ice and snow when I finished work around 12:15 a.m. I say 'found it' because it was barely recognizable. To be sure it was mine, I tried to brush the snow off the license plate.:nah: No, that didn't work because it was encrusted with ice. It kinda looked like my car and was parked where I thought I had parked it, so I scraped away enough ice to try the key in the lock... & yup, it was mine. I spent the next 20 minutes scraping the 6 inches of snow and ice from it so I could drive home. Alas, cold and tired I drove home... things are getting icy overnight folks.... use extra care driving tomorrow morning!
Glad you had fun Melody. At least somebody's enjoying it... but it isn't me. After 10 hours driving in it today and then back at it again tomorrow... spring can't come soon enough for me!)

UPDATE:
well we made an attempt for home around 6:30 last night after the traffic had slowed down a bit and there was a slight break in the weather.. we gassed up and headed for home.. It ended up taking us 45 min to an hour by the time we got home. The whole city was like a ghost town.. 7:00 pm and almost every business except for a few gas stations and superstore were open on our main drag of businesses.. it was very strange.. then we thought we would go to plan b for our route home as we thought it would be the safest one, but the road was completely snowed in and there were about 15 cars there that were not moving.. most of them made attempts and got stuck.. and i am talking about SUV's and trucks.. there was a few that just parked and walked in.. so we made a u turn and went back to plan a route.. got all the way to our colplex of condos and got stuck just inside the gate.. after about 15 minutes of shovelling a kind man in a 4x4 SUV came and towed us out of our drift.. then i shoveled for another 20-30 minutes a path to our garage and we made a run for it full speed until we made it to our garage.
today.. I am going nowhere.. I had enough fun yesterday.. my back muscles are so stiff I can barely walk.. and i doubt we would make it out of here again without geting stuck.. I love snow days.. just wish that tank rack was built already so i could be doing fish stuff.. my fish are also snowed in at my old place.

Yeah, sure, it LOOKS pretty...but I work for a roofing company, installing sheet metal, not exactly the safest in this weather :nah:. Even if it wasn't so icy, nothing like walking on an icy roof while carrying lengths of metal, but it's so dang cold that it makes it near impossible to handle the metal...my paycheck is gonna suffer this one pretty bad...it's always nice to get a day off here and there but I just had almost 2 weeks off for the holidays!!!! UGH!!!!.

Your job isn't the safest at the best of times. You wouldn't catch me working up on a roof in any weather.:wideeyed: It definitely hurts the paycheque but it's best to stay home safe and sound. Think of it on the bright side... more time to spend in the fishroom!

I'll have to come visit and take my own someday :D . Then you can come here and take pictures of the funny BC'ers in an inch of snow  .
CACAdmin
Jan 12th 2007, 12:35 AM
Yes, we BC'ers are a funny bunch... yes, we freak out at an inch or two of snow...lol. However, snow aside, the temps these days are far too reminiscent of why I left Montreal years ago! :Holiday-1: :Holiday-1: :Holiday-1: :Holiday-1: :Holiday-1:
As for the snow, our problem here is that we don't have snowplows we get the heavy wet stuff, so when it's not cleared, it turns to ice. (I drive the Community Shuttle Busses and a lot of the routes go through the residential areas. I spend a lot of time driving on sheets of compact ice.
I grew up with snowplows, snowblowers, sidewalk plows, etc. When I was a kid, the snowblowers dumped all that great snow in your front yard so you could actually create your own mini toboggan run! or build snowforts, etc.

Looks like more snow is on the way. Being BC born and bred (and living in the lower mainland for most of my life) I am dreading it. I love the snow, but not when I have to go to work. I take transit every day and on snow days everyone else takes transit too. Last time it snowed there were at least 100 people, maybe more, waiting for the Skytrain at Surrey Central. It took me two trains before I could even start my commute.
It got worse as the stations passed. One person would get off, another 10 would try to push their way in. I had a hard time getting off at Columbia, and I was right by the doors. Environment Canada is calling for 5-10cm overnight. Last time they said that Cloverdale got 50cm. Maybe tomorrow will be a snow day.....

Yes that must royally suck. At least most employers here are understanding. Elsewhere they expect you to cope because let's face it, you have to when it happens on a regular basis. I remember my Mother driving on country roads in storms, through drifts, etc, never missed work, God bless her, and never had an accident either. Never even went off the road and she didn't get her license until she was in her late 30's.
One of the 'Rah Rah Rah' people at Microsoft talked to us one day and told us about a friend of his who was late getting to work once. He was SO stressed, his boss was a tyrant and he'd never been late in his 20-some-odd years of working there. Everything went wrong and he figured he'd be fired by the time he got there.
The last straw was when they stopped his bus blocks away from his workplace. Nobody knew what was going on, cops were everywhere. He couldn't believe his bad luck.
Then he found out he wouldn't have to worry about his boss getting angry, because his boss had been in the same building he was headed to when a plane hit Twin Tower #1. Suddenly it wasn't so bad that he was late. Luck is a perspective thing it seems.
Take your time & get back to your fishies safely.
