Temperature: 18-24 C
Special Requirements: Suitable Tankmates: Most community fish.
Minimum Group Size: Shoaling fish. Should be kept in groups of six or more.
Diet: Will eat almost anything from flake to small live foods.
Sexing: Females become rounded and have a whitish belly when full of eggs.
Breeding and Reproduction: Said to be one of the easiest egg laying fishes to spawn, these wonderful and active fish will spawn readily in many conditions. For best results males and females can be separated and fed a varied diet including live foods. When the females become full of eggs they should be introduced. A spawning tank should be used with either marbles or also egg grate that can be picked up from the local hardware store. The egg grate should be laid upon a few stones or large marbles at the bottom of the aquarium. This method seems to be easier for removing the spawning substrate. The water level in the aquarium should be around 6 inches and a few clumps of moss may be provided. Air stones should be used for water movement and the tank itself should be around a 20 L for this species. The parents should be introduced either late in the evening or very early in the morning and a ratio of 2 males to 1 female should be utilized. Adding a little trickle of water after the parents are introduced can simulate monsoon season which will also help trigger spawning. The pair should be removed the next day and eggs hatch within a few days. Fry are very small and should be fed fine foods at first. The water level can be raised every few days after the fry are free swimming and regular water changes will speed up growth and maximize survival rates.
