Breeding and Reproduction: A very easy egg laying species to spawn. A tank of 5 gallons is a good size and should be heavily planted with fine leaves plants. Females should be introduced to the spawning tank first and then the males after a day or so. The group should be left overnight and removed afterwards. Fry hatch within a few days and once free swimming need very small food such as infusoria.
Notes: This fish was discovered by a Chinese boy scout named Tan hence the name Tanichthys= Tan's fish.

Another interesting thing about these fish is their ability to thrive in cooler water. Some reports say that these fish will survive at even 5 degrees C.
