Family: Poeciliidae
Origin: North and Central America. Found from central Indiana to Illinois in USA and then south to the Gulf of Mexico
Adult size: 4cm

Minimum Tank Size: 10 Gallon
Water Parameters (PH/GH/KH): PH:6-8 GH: 5-19
Temperature: 12-29 C
Special Requirements:Suitable Tankmates: Most peaceful community fishes but most commonly kept in species tanks.
Minimum Group Size: Pair
Diet: Will accept anything they can fit their mouths around, feed on small insects and zooplankton in the wild.
Sexing: Males have gonopodium and are smaller than females.
Breeding and Reproduction: These are livebearing fishes that will breed very easily. Keeping them in a well planted tank will help with survival rate of fry. Or alternatively the use of a breeding trap or drop tank can be utilized. These fish can give birth about every 4 weeks to usually a minimum of 2 dozen fry.
Notes: Gambusia affinis have been used widely in pest control(mosquitoes) all over North America and beyond. Some regions have reported adverse effects due to this.
