My wife found a snail in the fridge the other day. Because we know our children we assumed one of them found it outside and put it in the fridge for some unknown reason. After hours of interrogation, good cop bad cop, the kids woudlnt budge finally i asked my wife where did you find it? to which she replied "in the vegetable drawer". This led me to conclude that the snail in question was a hitchhiker on a batch of celery. We were going to put him outside but are glad we didnt due to the snowstorm.
I would assume he is a land snail but is it possible he could live in water?, he is in a jar with wet gravel and veggies my wife said he is going out as soon as its nice out but I think its native. It doesn't resemble the land snails in S. Ontario.

I assume to he is not native, so I would not let him go. You could google land snails for id.
If your thinking of keeping him, you could set up a terrarium for him. I don't think he would do well in water. I kept some of our local land snails in a terrarium for a bit.

I agree with Pam. Only a positive ID of a native snail would ensure that it would be safe to release. And as most of our veggies at this time of year are imported, it would most likely not be native. We should never take chances with ID'ing them and thus err on the side of caution. Releasing non-native creatures into the environment as this is how invasive species take hold and upset the local ecosystem (and snails lay hundreds of eggs :wideeyed: )

I'll let my wife know she either needs to eat him or we need to set up a terrarium ::D:

And what if she says she'll eat him and he has not been identified yet and she becomes ill.::D:

Hmm... I don't suppose they could narrow that down? lol It looks like Escargot actually - Helix pomatia. I'm no terrestrial snail guru by a long shot, but you can have a look at them and decide.
If you Google 'pet snail terrarium' or the like, you'll get lots of info. I could never quite get used to keeping land snails, but many enjoy them as pets.
If your wife decides he must go, call your local wildlife office and they'll determine if it's native or if it should be destroyed... or let you know who to contact at least.
