 I just came home from seeing the Body Worlds 3 show at Science World. I don't know how many of you got a chance to see it. Today was the last day. It was absolutely amazing.
I thought I knew a fair bit about the human anatomy but I learned so much more. And to be able to actually see the human body and all it's composite parts gave me a whole new perspective. All I've ever seen is in pictures either in books or on TV. I came away from the show in awe of how fascinating and complex the human body is.
I gather the only other showing in Canada was in Toronto. I think it's off next to somewhere in the US. However, if anyone who hasn't seen the show ever has the opportunity at some time to do so, I'd highly recommend it.
Edit: One additional note. I must say it's been many years since I was at an event where everyone attending was extremely polite, curteous and most considerate of others. It was crowded but no pushing, people waited patiently while others viewed. Those viewing exhibits accomodated others by stepping aside to let others see. It sure was nice to see that people still remember how to do that.

I'll never be a doctor - the whole idea is gross to me...lol. Great that you had a good time though!

Lots of people share your feelings. I could never be a doctor (or nurse) either. I could never bring myself to inflict pain upon someone  even though sometimes that is necessary in examining or treating a patient. However, I have always been fascinated by anatomy.
And when I die, I am donating what organs can be used to others and the rest to medical science to further the education of our next generation of doctors. (That is if they'll accept me. Who know's... they might take one look and send me back. )

:Eeewww: LOL Sorry, I just can't get past the fact that those are real dead people.
You should see me in a haunted house :wideeyed: . Go into one of those with me and I'll come out on your head looking like one of those scared cartoon cats....

Yes, they are actual people who chose to donate their bodies to enable us to learn from them and perhaps develop a deeper appreciation for the complexity of the human anatomy. You do get the sense though that everyone attending the exhibit have a deep respect for the individuals who by donating their bodies have made this possible.
The bodies have undergone a process where they are plasticized. Yes, you know they are actual people but they look more like plastic models... not scary, not gross. A lot of the exhibit consists of viewing each of the various systems or organs of the body separately.
I understand your reluctance but knowing your thirst for knowledge, Melody, I think if you could get past that you'd be utterly fascinated.

Jeepers...this talk about Body Worlds makes me wish that I went to see the exhibit. I always wanted to when I first read about it several years ago, but of course when it's in town and nobody else wanted to go...I know, nobody to blame but myself.
But next time...

yes, the whole theme of the excibit is a homage to the human body really, everyone deffinitally had the deepest respect for the, well, people on display...
there was also showcases on how diseases effect our bodys, ie smoker's lungs/normal lungs... how different ailment effect different body parts,
it was all focused on education and was actually very very artistic in how they chose to display the donated bodies...
my favourite display was the artery systems, they had blocks of solid plastic with a human head and a human arm inside, with everything removed except for the artery system, they also had a baby lamb and a full rooster done in this same manner...
after deeply observing that, its amazing how similar our artery systems look to how plant and tree roots grow, it makes you wonder...
just put me in further awe of the flawless design and craftsmanship of nature

That was one of my favorites as well. And you're right about the similarity to root systems. Absolutely amazing!
