I'm a firm beleiver that the stupidest question is the one you didn't ask...So.
I am now into my second year here with the outdoor pond, we first added small feeder size Koi, and then last summer added about 50 comets, or goldfish, I'm not sure the difference, in assorted colors, . There have been many breedings that have taken place since.
I have many colors of Koi, however, it seems I have goldfish that are solid black, some pink, and some that don't quite look like goldfish or Koi.
the Koi are easy to tell from the others, but are all the others Goldfish?

One of the common goldfish called black moors are certainly black. I have no idea whether it is a common color in the comet type usually seen in ponds.

Goldfish fry usually start off blackish and as they age the dark color gets replaced by gold. In one batch of fry of mine, some were almost 9 months before their color completely changed to gold. Often you will see gold bellies, black backs, just black fins, then completely gold. For commercial purposes you would want ones that color up early. :GEEK:

Koi and goldfish can interbreed. :frown: Koi aren't usually breeding size until over 10 inches (unless stunted).

That reminds me of the first time I picked out goldfish. I loved the black & orange and carefully chose two of them out of a zillion feeders. The clerk LOVED me. One looked like it had puppy ears - why couldn't she understand my desire to have that specific one? :spinny: They both turned gold of course  . The third was all white except for an almost perfect rectangular red-orange cap that went down over his head. That one stayed the same and the store I gave them to got a very nice price for him at the larger size I'd grown him out to. Not bad for a .39 cent fish.
