I just received this e-mail from the Living Oceans Society. It's fantastic that they'll be exploring British Columbia waters and gathering hard evidence to prove protection measures are needed.

Hi Melody,

We are diving into the depths of the ocean in search of cold water corals off the coast of British Columbia. Living Oceans Society’s Finding Coral Expedition will be the first research voyage to understand the magical and mysterious world of corals in B.C.

Research from around the world shows that cold water corals play an important role in maintaining the health of the ocean. Unfortunately, in British Columbia the lack of research has left cold water corals virtually unprotected and vulnerable to the impacts of destructive fishing methods such as bottom trawling.

We are stepping up to gather the much needed facts to document the existence of cold water corals – the internal organs of the underwater ecosystem – and compel the Government of Canada to implement a network of marine protected areas along the B.C. coast. We are hoping you will be able to use your extensive knowledge, awareness and reputation to encourage marine and fresh water preservationists to help.A generous friend of Living Oceans Society will match donations dollar for dollar with their Finding Coral Challenge Grant.

Ross McMillan, President of the Tides Canada Foundation, has verified the Living Oceans Society intent.

"Tides Canada has worked with Living Oceans Society for years and I can attest to their hard work and determination to care for our oceans. Since they began in 1998, Living Oceans Society has conducted cutting edge analysis and communications work and will soon be embarking on an advanced research project, the Finding Coral Expedition, all in an effort to transform the way our oceans are managed. They are strong advocates for the coast of British Columbia."

You can follow the expedition here (http://www.findingcoral.com/expedition) and there is a donation button at the top of the page.

All the best to our friends at the Living Oceans Society and Tides Canada. Your work is well beyond important, it is crucial.
