View Full Version : Victoria Day long weekend weather

It's often thought of as the unofficial start to summer (in BC, it's pretty much the start of camping season), but this Victoria Day long weekend is anything but summer-like in Manitoba. Obviously, Mother Nature thinks they still need more snow there. "
In the past 24 hours, a heaping of snow was dumped in a wide area about 50 kilometres north of Brandon, including Dauphin, Riding Mountain National Park and the Interlake."
Most areas got 10-15 cm but one area got 30 cm. of the white stuff. :err: Does this (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2009/05/15/mb-snow-dauphin-plow.html) look like camping weather to you?

I missed out twice on that one.
There is no way I would be camping in weather like that nor in the severe thunderstorms we had last evening. There were the usual statements about how a storm like that could spawn tornadoes and of course the local weather station was carrying live doppler radar to keep everyone excited about the possibility. I suspect Susankat had many of the same warnings sometime yesterday, it was a big storm front that came through.
I also lost track of Victoria day. I always remember it as 24 May which would be next weekend. I guess it is just my age showing.

Sure hope nothing materializes of those tornado warnings. :wideeyed: I'm a fair weather camper, so I'm with you. You haven't forgotten about Victoria Day... just our bizarre formula for celebrating Queen Victoria's birthday which is actually on May 24th.
Because we insist on it landing on a Monday so that we can have a long weekend, we celebrate Victoria Day either on the 24th (if it's a Monday) or the Monday preceding the 24th of May. This of course means the 18th of May this year. Confusing?

The weather isn't so bad today, but it isn't as warm as it usually is by a long shot. Better than snow though!

I did some planting in the garden before the torrents of rain arrived. It's 16 now but going for half of that tomorrow. It beats Manitoba though, or Newfoundland the other day. We're going to have a cool Patriotes Day coming (in Quebec, we got rid of Victoria years ago, even though we kept the long weekend. We keep changing what we call it).
Victoria Day used to be 'firecracker' day. In working class anglo areas of Montreal, we'd build bonfires in the streets. Then the police would come to break it up, and a ritual of all h*** breaking loose would happen. It was your basic dumb chronic meaningless riot. Ah, the good old days...

We did the road fire thing on Halloween night. Not me, I was an angel, but the other kids did.
Mr. Edge has inspired me to garden so I checked the weather - Sunny & 19c both tomorrow and Monday. Perfect for gardening. :Flowers3:

:err: Ah, so it was you that started those fires and caused the riots. I, like Melody was an  and did not take part.
I did not realize that they changed the name to Patriotes Day. BTW do you still get Canada Day as a holiday? When I lived there, I used to wish that the week between St. Jean de Baptiste and Canada Day should be declared as a holiday, but no such luck unless you took the time as vacation.

You could call it most anything and I'd still appreciate it. I had to get up early anyway, to take my poor teenaged daughter out to wage slavery in the Tim's drive through window, but having a Monday free to do my correcting is a grand luxury. Even if it's currently three freaking degrees out there, and there's an enormous poorly groomed skunk sitting in my front yard like some sort of toxic garden gnome.
We have that great week coming, when La Fete Nationale fades into Canada Day. Each political persuasion tries to have better fireworks than the other. The kids enjoy it all.

He probably wants you to invite him in out of the cold.
Yesterday was beautiful here 22 and sunny. Today it's currently 13 and cloudy but supposedly going up to 17 but rainy. I guess the campers will probably be heading home early.

What happened to my 'sunny with cloudy periods' forecast for today? Who ordered rain? {SULK!}
{Taking in 3c & snow posts} Oh... well never mind then, I'll take the rain...lol...what is UP with this weather? It's like this across the country.

We had way too many senseless deaths this weekend  . I hope the rest of Canada did better in that respect.
