Well I did another water change today.
Glad I did as I fond a fry in my filter system :err: So I saved him!
The real fun started when I was done and realized I have 3 times as many fry as I thought. I only had 3 that I'd been able to see at any given time before. Right after the change tho they all came out of the woodwork and there looks like a good 10-12. :wideeyed:
I hate to say it but I'm gonna need a fish who will eat some fry....or I will have a wall of tanks.
too much fun!

The parents will eat them, you just have to take some cover/plants out. It might be too late now - they kind of lose interest after the birth frenzy. However, that many will grow out fine in the tank, you just have to avoid more. You may want to return the females and get males instead so you won't have to worry.
You can sell them as fry in the Classifieds (http://www.canadianaquariumconnection.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=15) and joining your local fish club will also provide a place to auction or trade fish. I'm not sure how close you are, but you could check out the London Aquaria Society (http://www.londonaquariasociety.com/).

Slip a piece of filter sponge over the intake of your filter to prevent fry from getting sucked up. Just about all my tanks have one.

I too put a sponge over the intake in my tanks... keeps not only fry but baby snails from being sucked up.
As for the fry, I'm curious. Are they all red wags?

Well since its my first cycle I'm really not what sure to expect of the fry.
I am assuming there all going to be straight up Red Wag's. I got my stuff from the Big Al's here and the fish as well. So my adults came from a tank that was exlusively Hifin Red Wags. I think I'll get the same, but like u said before there not much more than swimming eyes and fins at the moment.
Speaking of wich there now 1 week old  and getting a bit bigger and braver they were out when I fed the adults last night and I saw em nipping at food way bigger than they are. too cute.

In that platys give birth first from their last insemination, you're probably correct that they'll be red wag hifins but if either of the fish were from mixed parentage or if she was impregnated by another male before being put in the tank at the store, you might be in for some surprises. I'm not really knowledgeable about the genetics and which genes are dominant but maybe when Melody gets here she'll be able to give you some insight.
The fry are really cute when they venture out... I agree it's priceless to see them try to tear a bite off a big flake of food. Enjoy watching them grow. (I always do... never tire of it.)

Supposing they're a true-breeding strain, they should all be Hifins but the broods should remain comparatively small. According to Dr. Norton, the Hifin gene is a fatal gene in double doses. If you cross a Hifin with a Hifin, a certain percentage will not be born. You would get more Hifins in the end if you outcrossed to a regular fin parent. However, then you'd have to find homes for the regular fin siblings, which isn't as easy as for Hifins.
I didn't realize they were Hifins - you'll move those easily enough.
As for genetics, I have much to learn and I wouldn't have it any other way :D .

speaking of moving em... my constant gabbing about my fish at work attracted some attention and now I found someone there who might be able to help me locally with some things.
She been out of aquarium keeping for awhile but used to keep a 200g,100g,75g tanks for years and is planning on starting up again. She said if she gets her tank up she wants some of my newborns.

As you can see fish-keeping is contagious. All you have to do is start talking fish. Already you have a potential home for your fry.
