When a coral reef was discovered at at Dubai Dry Docks' breakwater, the question was how to save it from the effects of future development which is to take place. The needed to relocate the coral but when traditional methods (chiselling it off rocks and transporting it in baskets) appeared not to be an option, they decided to move the entire reef (rock by rock). And so they moved "more than 1,100 coral-encrusted rocks, each weighing about five tonnes" 20 at a time over a 49 day period. It appears to have been a success according to a Nakhhel spokesman with "with damage kept to a minimum, as indicated by a lack of breakage and stress."
