Researchers in Australia, taking part in a federally funded study, hope to propagate sponges in captivity with the end goal of "sustainable culturing of marine invertebrate for public aquariums and ornamental aquarium markets". This could reduce the need to collect them in the wild and thus reducing the impact on reefs.
There are often scientists that would be interested in working toward finding alternatives but funding is often the issue. It's great to see that the Australian government has taken this approach in trying to preserve the reefs.
