Last month at our club auction I picked up 2 20 long tanks for free. This week I picked up 2 33 gal long tanks for $60.00 for both. Footprint on these is the same as a 55 gal but is shorter. These are going to make great bristlenose/pleco tanks. Which tomorrow I get 6 L180's and 6 L066's. I've been walking on clouds this week.

I much prefer 'long' tanks all around, and so do most fish. You're having lotsa fun over there!

Long tanks are also so much easier to do maintenance on (they don't present any 'depth-challenges' for vertically-challenged, short-armed folk. This is from a personal perspective (I'm rather short in case you hadn't guessed. :twitcy: )

I like the long tanks my self. but what is going to be fun is the 2 33's are going on the top 2 shelves of a rack above a 75 so I will still need a ladder. Same way with the 220 I am going to have to have a ladder for it.

Got new ancistrus sp. today also. L180, L066 and 4 calico's. so need to get tanks running quick.

Be careful up there on the ladder. I have to do it too for my 70g and every now and then the image crosses my mind of me losing my balance, either grabbing the edge of the tank or landing against it as I plummet to the floor.:wideeyed:

Enjoy your new plecos... when you get them settled and find a minute in between setting up tanks, we'd love to see pics of these new additions.

Make it a very strong ladder. A friend of mine had a metal three step ladder collapse from age while he was on it. He came down on the edge of a tank, broke it, almost bled to death and severed a main nerve. He still has incomplete use of one hand.
It's a worst case scenario, but he had used the same cheap ladder for years, and it simply buckled up the side.
I have two tanks that are higher up, even though I'm 6'3. I built a ledge along the base of my wooden stand, screwed into the frame and with legs touching the floor. I put a 2x6 on it for standing, and it's been a great fishroom innovation.

I know what it feels like falling off a ladder. I used to work for Texaco and one day while hanging signs from the ceiling I went to step down off the 8 ft ladder and missed my step. I fell back into a candy rack system and really bruised and scratched my back up pretty bad.

I think what I'll be getting is a 3 step, step stool. The ledge sounds like a good idea, but I am bad about things in front of the tanks and tripping on them or bruising my legs. So that wouldn't be good for me. :)

How about a swing out step to stand on Susan? You could have a pivot point on the stand, some swinging legs and a 2x6 to stand on. Lift the 2x6 and the step would swing out while the legs fell down below it. Kick the legs back under the stand and the 2x6 would swing out of the way. I like this idea, maybe on my next build I won't worry about my reach. A cut off piece of candle would make a nice lubricated washer between the stand and the shelf and between the shelf and the swinging legs. One utility candle would serve for all the washers.
