View Full Version : Hurricane busters?

One of the latest ideas to deal with hurricanes is to position large tubs specifically designed to cool water in a hurricane's projected path. Supposedly they would either be collected after the hurricane passed or made to sink and decompose. :wideeyed:

Other possible uses are to "nutrient-rich sediment on ocean floors to promote plant and animal growth in environmentally-degraded areas." and to "moving nutrients and other material from the ocean floor to the surface to promote growth of algae to trap carbon as a tool in fighting global warming."

It's unknown if or when this new technology will be used but with the big money behind it, I'm guessing it will. We as humans often, in an attempt to fix problems we have created, create even more and sometimes bigger problems. I wonder how much thought has gone into the total potential impact on all sea life has gone into this.

Jay,

that has always been my positions as well. Nature/earth/whole ecosystem are in a very delicate balance, parts of which we humans often do not know about. Why are humans so predisposed to play God? Maybe we would be better off just making sure we minimize our impact and then let nature rebalance itself...

I do like how industry, science and the average person are thinking in this direction but as you say, it has to be thought through and thoroughly tested. We've come a long way in our awareness of these issues overall and that's nice to see.

As long as we don't repeat anything like adding old tires for corals, we'll be ok. Yes, they really did that...lol.
