View Full Version : nezahualcoyotl fishing

I have an anecdote here. I was catching fish this morning in a heavily planted 75 gallon, as I had foolishly auctioned fish from my vallisneria jungle. I could not get a male nezzie, but I had a bunch of Limia sulphurophila, so I went off to pack them. I left my largest net in the water. When I returned, it had my dominant nezahualcoyotl male and two 'females' in it. I scooped them, bagged the dominant male and put the 'females' in a clear jar. When I looked at them under a strong light, I could see from the thickness of the lowest ray of the anal fin that they were sleeper males. I went back to the 75, pulled up the net and it had four males in it - one sworded, three dominated.
I've noticed nezzie males hide sometimes. I do believe they like to claim hiding places. I would guess that in 5 minutes, 90% of the males in that tank found their way to the back of that large net. No females did.
I can hear Melody saying that's because females are too smart, but hey, the fish that got caught get to go out west where the deer and the antelope play.

 Been there, done that more than a few times and cursed myself for it. So I know exactly how you felt.
However, at least it turned out well after all, seeing as all those males decided to camp out in the net. (Silly fish:spinny:... good foryou though.) When I try that, every fish in the tank seems to find their way into the net except the one I'm trying to catch. :frown: Would you care to loan me your 'magic net', Gary?

that is a classic livebearer thing as long as you don't want them they will be there as soon as you try to catch them they are nowhere to be found.

You're going to have to work on that part, Gary. If you succeed, it could make you a fortune. Let me know when you come up with the solution to luring males only. I'll volunteer to test the prototype on the fish in my 70g. They're net-wary pros!

Boys are stupid, throw rocks at them. OK, we probably should leave that behind on the kinder playground and move on.
I don't think I can claim too much intelligence for this woman today, or at least not when I'm in a hurry. Nothing like completely forgetting a species that is supposed to go in a box. Luckily the person who was taking it to the post office hadn't dropped it off yet, so back it came and I added the Goodeids. Good thing the tank is small, I had around 7 netted in minutes. Gary would never have forgiven me if I'd forgotten his Green Goodies!
So they're off to Quebec, where the deer & the antelope must play in french because their playmates have nothing else to feel superior about   .
