Anyone ever just use incandescent plant bulbs for lighting in their tank? I"m trying it out now for one of my tanks but I've just started. So far i'm justing a 60 watt plant-grow bulb. IT's rated at 6500k but i'm not sure if the light intensity is the same as compact flourescents.

They don't have the same intensity and most aren't the correct spectrum for plants. They also burn really hot which can overheat a small tank (which is where most incandescant canopies are found). The best bet is to use a screw-in compact fluorescent bulb such as the 27W Philips Daylight bulbs available at London Drugs. They are cheap, don't burn as hot, are more energy efficient and the light is much more intense. Post some pics and let us know how your experiment works out.
