Do plants have a set lifespan? Or can they theoretically live forever? Lets start with a hardy plant, anubias. I just got one the other day and read that they are super hardy. One site even showed a couple of them completly chopped down. All of it's leaves were gone, half of the roots were chopped away, and they even split the thick rhizome into three pieces. Basically, they tied down the disfigured anubias to a driftwood and left it there. So I did that to my anubias too since it was too big for my tank and I wanted to experience the joy of watching this small piece of rhizome grow back to it's former self.

I have no idea about lifespan of plants but I do know that you can split anubias up as long as each section has a piece of rhyzome and a few roots. They grow very slowly however, so patience is a requirement while waiting for any substantial growth. Also, remember that the plant is most vulnerable when you first split the rhyzome.
