Once it was thought that plastic bags where the big threat to creatures in the ocean because creatures will either eat them or get tangled in them. Now a study shows that many plastics (such as those used in plastic cutlery and water bottles) break down within a year in the ocean at 86F releasing:

"styrene trimer, a polystyrene by-product, and bisphenol A, a chemical used in hard plastics such as reusable water bottles and the linings of aluminum cans.
Bisphenol A (BPA) has been shown to interfere with the reproductive systems of animals, while styrene monomer, a derivative of styrene trimer, is a known carcinogen."
