I'm going to try a little experiment and thought I would share. I've got exclamation point rasboras (Boraras urophthalmoides) and celestial pearl danios that I would like to breed. I noticed on hot days this summer that their tank was the same temperature of my Tylomelenia snail tank. I've unplugged both heaters and the snails are doing okay at a slightly lower temperature than I would normally keep them at.
I've moved over a breeding group of both fish sp. to the snail tank which has lots of moss and plan on leaving them there for 4 -7 days before replacing them into their original tank to see if they'll lay eggs. Judging by how the exclamation point rasboras are behaving, I suspect they will lay some.
I thought any fry would do better in an established tank than removing the moss to a new tank - I often see little microorganisms in the water column, so I am sure there are good colonies of tiny things that very small fry would like to eat.
I've got walter worm and microworm colonies so I should be okay when they can eat bigger food. I may also start an infusoria colony for them, but I expect with the snails that there is some in the tank already.
Keeping my fingers crossed....

I am sooo envious of your CPDs, I want them so badly. Someday.
I wish you all the luck in the world with both species! :D

Laura and Blossom,
add me to the list of CPD (attempted) breeders. I just got 5 last week and am planning on breeding them as well. Love the little guys. But I have to fatten them up first and they are still very skittish. It took them almost a week to calm down enough to actually start eating.
What do your CPDs like to eat? Mine like micro worms, white worms, frozen daphnia and frozen Cyclops. I'll be waiting to read your progress with abated breath and probably making copious notes...
Margaret.

To all who are trying to breed CPD's - There is an article in Sept 2008 Bulletin from the Hamilton & District Aquarium Society from a gentleman in their club who has bred CPDs'. There was one also in in Bulletin from the Aquarium Club of Edmonton wriitten by the fishroom manager of Edmonton's Big Als. You should be able to contact the clubs to get copies of these articles.

I've got fry!
I counted only 6, but am keeping my fingers crossed for a few more. I can't tell at this point which species they are - they are wee.
I just fed some walter worms, but think they may be a bit big still so I added a drop of liquid fry food. I suspect there's lots of micro-organisms in the tank as it's a snail tank with no fish.
I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully I can keep the little guys going.

Congrats, Laura. Keeping fingers crossed you find a few more. We'll be eager for them to grow large enough for you to be able to tell which ones they are.

Update:
I've counted 9 fry - still not sure what sp. though.
Tank specs are about 25 degrees and it's a very established tank with lots of moss, 6 tylomelania snails and a bunch of very small ramshorns in a 10 gallon. Both snails aren't in the moss much, so I figured they wouldn't eat too many eggs.
I've been feeding them twice per day, a drop of liquid fry food and walter worms. I've starting feeding microworms now. They are certainly growing - I haven't needed the magnifying glass in a while.
i've been doing a 10 percent water change every 2-3 days. Someone gave me the neat trick to siphon from the filter when doing the water change - it ensures the little guys safety.

Siphoning from the filter works really well - I've got a sponge over the intake so everything in the tank remains safe. I can't claim credit for the great idea - someone else told me.
Realistically it's probably less than a 10% change - but I'm sticking with frequent small changes as the fry seem fine with it.

but thanks for passing it on ..... I was totally stressed thinking hummm they would probablt fit through the mesh I use !
Now I will just grab it through the sponge filter ... something simple and couldnt think of it !
thanks

Turns out the 9 babies were CPD fry. All are doing well, and the biggest has started getting spots and a splash of colour on his dorsal so I can tell what they are.
They're now big enough to move to the main tank with the adults. I had another round of adults in the 10 gallon for 5 days or so, and just took them out. Hopefully I'll have exciting news in a week.
Given they're the first egg layers I've raised, I think they're dead easy. Clean water, a really established tank, small water changes and walter/micro worms after the liquid fry food - it all went very well.
As I mentioned in another thread, I've been lucky enough to acquire another 18 adults, about 1/2 are from a different source, so the gene pools will be varied. (I got all from other hobbyists shutting down their tanks)
