Starting to plan out stocking my 65g...I've moved over two baby clowns loaches and 2 pairs of sailfin mollies from another tank....I'll be adding a colony of maybe 5 L066 King tiger plecos, but would like some middle swimmers as the pleco's will occupy the bottom. I'd rather have a few large fish as opposed to 20 cardinals......Any ideas would be great..

Thanks

I was going to suggest some pretty colored platys ;) because they actively swim in all areas of the tank... that was until you said 'large'... which they're not. Oh well, maybe someone else will have a better suggestion.

Rainbows are a great idea...I have 12 or so turquoise rainbows in my 110g and they are a very active mid tank swimmer!!! And beautiful colors from yellow/green to deep blue/violet, one of my favs.

You definitly don't want those mollies  , but you might need snails, so I would find someone who had snails and trade them there Mollies.

That aside, Rainbows are awesome fish. Beautiful color range, community natured - perfection. Remember that when you see them in stores they'll look plain - they color up as they age. Check out the Home of the Rainbowfish (http://members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/Contents.htm) for excellent information and pictures/info on pretty much every species.

I like Congo Tetras too  . Same appeal as above.

Both can live happily with Mollies if you don't want to part with them.

I can get the Dwarf neon rainbows if you're interested.

In such as large tank, rainbow fishes would love the space. I gues the other option is to go with angel fishes and some medium sized faster fishes. It's a hard call but I guess it will depend on what you really want and work from there.

Yes, you can mix them, but they may produce hybrid offspring. I find if there is both sexes of the same species in a tank, they prefer their own kind. However, with their spawning methods I can see another male getting in on the frenzy very easily.

I had Madagascar Rainbows, Axelrodi, Turquoise and Dwarf Neon Rainbows all in the same tank at once - no problems at all. They do still need more than one of their own kind though, or preferrably anyway.

That is definitly too pricey, especially for a chain store fish, in my opinion - were they fully colored adults or something? One of the breeders I'm bringing fish in from in the Spring has a good selection of Rainbows, but I'm sure you don't want to wait that long. Mr. Mykiss will treat you right if the Dwarf Rainbows interest you - they're a very pretty Rainbow too.
