I thought it would be fun to know how our neighbours across Canada vary.:twitcy:

So I will start today's:

in Toronto, its been fall all week, leaves are blowing off the trees already with strong winds we had earlier this week.

and I had to put the heat on....already!:realmad:

today's high is 10C and sunny!

In Halifax it is 18, and sunny/cloudy. There's a bit of wind but overall it is a very nice fall day. We've had rain on and off this week and the weekend doesn't look any better. I notice a real change the last couple of weeks and it is not for the better. To be honest with the weather we had this year, it feels like we barely had a summer.

Here in the Vancouver area it is definitely fall. Last Sunday it was 20 and sunny but each day this week has gotten a little cooler.

Today it's raining and only 9 at the moment... supposed to get up to 13 this afternoon. (To think that just over a week ago the temps hit 29  )

Cool and rainy here as well, but up until last Saturday, Septembers average temps were higher than not only June and July, but August as well.
That has bode well for golfers.

For the fourth consecutive year, my furnace would not start up, and with having replaced every major part, figured it would be something simple. Luckily it was, the cooling fan had stuck in position, and only needed to be nudged a little with a screwdriver and sprayed with WD-40.

Here's hoping we can all enjoy a milder winter than last year.

Glad to hear you managed to get the furnace going. (What would we ever do without WD-40?) You certainly don't want to find that out when the frigid winter temps arrive.

Then living here on the coast wouldn't be your cup of tea. Winter is rain, rain and more rain. With the exception of the last couple of years (when we had snow and it was extremely cold for here), we pretty much get just 2 seasons: wet and dry (which is often not all that dry:spinny:  )

hanging laundry on the clothesline
washing the car
washing windowsWe have sunshine again so I am not going to tempt fate and do any of the above.

Who wants to send me some sunshine and warmth!?

I'll send you some but somehow I don't think there'll be any warmth left to it by the time it reaches you (after all it has to head over the mountains and across the prairies before it gets there and I gather it's rather chilly there too.

A beautiful day here today Noctame. My weather seems to be about a day ahead of Ontario so maybe tomorrow for you. It was so nice I took the bike out for a 200 mile meander through the Spoon river valley scenic route near the Illinois and Spoon rivers. This weekend and next lots of the small towns in that valley put on craft and rummage sales in a town park or similar location. With a sunny day and temperatures around 12 to 15C, I just had to go.

Well, I guess I can count my self in as being on the west or left coast, the tide does flow up to the Mission bridge, but then I am an abrupt 700 ft climb from that, which does seem to provides an extreme 4 seasons. This morning, Thursday Oct 8th is 2 degrees, last Friday was 0 at this time, Saturday we had some friends over for one last wood gathering party, at Midnight it was 3 degrees, and then the wind started blowing, within half an hour the temp was up to 13, so we sat and enjoyed the fire a little longer. I have about 5 cords of firewood split and stored now and we retreived about another 1.5 cords. I primed the Diesel furnace, got it up and running, 500 liters in the tank, should order another 500ltr before the snow falls, then I hope I am ready for old man Winter.
But its going to pour rain first...

It seems like it was only a month ago you mentioned it was finally warm enough to ship, and now your getting cold weather, so am glad to hear you usually have a nice fall.
When do you start putting in gardens out there? Here we start May long weekend usually, except for peas they can go in earlier. We still have not had frost here. Usually the end of October is when we see our first snow, it maybe wet, but it is still snow. Seems to always start on Halloween quite frequently.

CACAdmin
Oct 9th 2009, 09:30 PM
It's been years since I last planted a garden but if my memory serves me right we used to put the garden in at the beginning of May. However, your gardens quickly catch up and surpass ours as it gets much warmer there (unless we're talking about this last summer) and once the real heat hits, the growth in your gardens really takes off.

Pamelajo
Oct 9th 2009, 09:37 PM
So that is only a 3 week difference, but you can probably leave yours in (potatoes) longer as your frost will probably be later? Seems like some of the other provinces may have a much shorter growing season.

CACAdmin
Oct 9th 2009, 10:34 PM
Here's a guide to planting in Vancouver: http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/articles/5/

As you can see some things which you plant from seed like radishes, peas, beets and onions can be planted as early as the end of March. Other stuff must wait until April or May. Don't remember planting in March but maybe it was April and May. I guess I should dig out some old photos to job my memory.

Overnight lows yesterday and today were at the freezing point so I am thinking it is time to bring in my goodeids soon. I need to finish building a tank stand and I am afraid it will not get a paint job quick enough for the goodeids health. Maybe when fish go out next spring, I will be able to do the painting. Meanwhile, I can't be on much today because I have a stand to build and a tank to set up. The pond filter will be coming in with the fish so no problem there.

CACAdmin
Oct 11th 2009, 09:58 AM
Last minute tank building project, eh OldMan? The weather forces it on you for the sake of the fish, even if you had other plans. I'm sure you'll get it done quickly. And yes, painting can wait until Spring but I guess that just means you'll have to be extra cautious about spills over the winter.

It's only 6 here and supposed to go up to 13 this afternoon. A little chilly for this time of year but at least the sun is shining. I'm just thankful I'm not in Winter-peg (err, I mean Winnipeg) as they were out shovelling their first snow of the season.

I expect a heavy display of fall colors to be starting soon. This was our first frost so it will get under way shortly now. Murphy's law for sure. Somebody must have alerted him that you were changing all the windows. The fishies must have wondered why they were all wrapped up... glad to hear you kept them warm. Not so easy to keep yourself warm, though. Look on the bright side. At least when winter sets in, you'll be toasty warm.

The weather should improve here now. For the past week we have been having snow and wind. We have been having new windows installed (10 of them) over the past 4 days. The last was switched out yesterday. I kept the tanks wrapped up in blankets, quilts, and towels so they have been fine. Thank goodness we have a fireplace downstairs, but I still bundled up in a blanket. Now, they are calling for double digits. Don't you just love Murphy's Law! :twitcy:

On the happy side of zero (just barley), but sun is shining.

Had very nice weather for a late Thanksgiving get-together on the weekend, and while there was no traditional bird (had ham instead), there were still plenty around. Saturday morning the skies were filled with literally thousands of geese, and on a few occasions witnessed two or more formations converging into one big one. That of course stopped by the time I grabbed the camera, but thought this one was kinda neat.-

http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae196/SaskPicDude/gees1.jpg

While playing a game of cards on Friday, we heard a loud thump against one of the windows, and this guy stood there for a while getting his
(or her) bearings.-

http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae196/SaskPicDude/hawk3.jpg

From what I could tell it was a Swainsons hawk, and being a startled bird of prey cautiously only took a couple of pics
(not wanting to spook it further). It soon flew away seemingly no worse for the wear.

That goes to show what tough little creatures they are. We tend to pamper our aqutic pets which are often quite adaptable to more temperature extremes than we give them credit for. I know I had missed a platy outside in the pond one year, only to bring her in when temps were like that and she was just fine. (acclimated her slowly, of course). It's sudden changes they can't handle. In fact, we're much the same. We adapt to the cold weather much better if it happens gradually... same with a heat wave.

RiverStone
Nov 6th 2009, 12:17 PM
Well it's pretty much over with the exception of the wind. We ended up with rain at the end, so the rain did most of the clearing for me. Not much left to shovel. Didn't need the snowblower and it's a good thing because my other half is away and I haven't operated it yet.

My son is 6 & he helps a bit. Next in line is 3 and she just plays. Last is 9 months and she can't move in her snowsuit. Not much help to be had now but look out in 10 years. You too Jay? I took some shortbread to the club Christmas party and will be taking more to work with me tomorrow. Each of my children insist on a shortbread care package each year and it doesn't count if mom or a store makes it. That duty is strictly mine. Even the grandkids have started to look forward to getting some. I need to teach at least one of them to make it while I am still around to do that. Too many things get lost over the generations. My grandmother used to make a wonderful jam that she called a strawberry conserve but nobody has the recipe now and it is lost to us. It contained nuts, strawberries and dried pineapple at least. Who knows what else was in it.

He rented the biggest truck and it was packed. So was my tracker and his pickup. The man is the king of rubbermade bins and he does not even keep fish anymore. lol I did manage to get a python out of it.

He sold the appliances with the house along with two beds, a pool table and den furniture.
We had some pizza for lunch and then mom came over with homemade soup when we were almost done. Then we had to move some furniture to her house while we had the truck. Trev's fiance promised they would not move for a very long time.

Sorry, neon, the shortbread is now in the freezer (hopefully to ensure that there is some for Christmas)... and if I attempted to send any, my kids would probably track me down and trip me before I got to the post office with it.

Glad you like the Christmas smilies. As for the :Holiday-3: and the :HappyReindeer: , you'll find them and many more under the 'Winter' section of the smilies. Just click the 'more' link at the bottom of the smilies to the right of the reply box and when the Smilie List comes up, scroll down to almost the bottom (Winter is the 2nd to last section... right after Halloween).:SmileyOrnament:

Melody, come on out to Alberta. You can have all the snow you want! Please take some of our -30 temperatures with you too (please, pretty please).

Our blizzard is over and has left some interesting drifts. The fence next to the garage is 4 ft. The other is a view out my living room window.

{{Packing}} I'll bring the rum & eggnog!

Folding laundry is better than doing dishes, but I cheat with the dishwasher. They need to invent a laundry folder - how hard can it be? They do it for packaged shirts, don't they? Do we ask for much? I think not.

 {{Unpacking rum & eggnog}} Looks like we'll be getting some snow this weekend - maybe even 20cm! I'm all excited. It's supposed to be my favorite kind too - those big flakes drifting down. I'll be able to throw snowballs at the neighbours, which I think they truly enjoy and only try to cover it up with their cursing.

Although obviously some people work weekends, at least many will be able to stay home and enjoy it.:Holiday-9:

They figure it will be rained away before the weekend is out, but it's something!

It's coming, it's not coming, only a little is coming, it's coming but later - these people (http://www.theprovince.com/news/Metro+Vancouver+braces+first+significant+snowfall+ this+weekend/2329352/story.html) are playing with my head! It doesn't sound like it will last long, but it is on the way and is supposed to hit my area hardest. We just decided it would be much more fun to do it on Monday.

Everyone outside of the Lower Mainland BC can click the link and have a good laugh. There's been at least three big newspaper stories about this weekend/Monday's few flurries and 15cm of snow  .

A snowblower for Vancouver... only the Olympics would spur such a purchase. (And the city of Vancouver gets the least amount of snow of any municipality, except maybe Richmond.) People from around here who haven't lived elsewhere in this country are going to wonder what the heck it is. It'll stop traffic with people wanting to watch it in action.

FYI for folks not from the lower mainland: We live in denial about snow here. Snow removal equipment is minimal at best and a snowblower is unheard of.

Now I know why I was getting mixed messages in the paper. They're not kidding about it being the VANCOUVER Sun. If Van isn't getting it, it doesn't matter  . At least they finally mentioned it in today's story. I finally have a good reason to give the Vancouver Sun when they want me to subscribe to that along with The Province (which I now receive, I just read the Sun online). I can just say "I don't live in Vancouver". All done. :twitcy:

There's a different type of cold though. I used to come out of the NWT to visit New Brunswick and they'd all make fun of me because I'd be freezing to death down there...lol. The cold is more damp.

Everyone is in a panic here - we could get 8 inches tonight! It should be gone by the afternoon, high of +5 and pushing +10 by the end of the week.

The poor birds and squirrels are here in droves. Some bird species here are almost sub-tropical, so if the ground is frozen or there's snow, they're lost. Some species that 'fly south' from Canada for the Winter, only come this far too. I've thrown seeds and Christmas mix nuts out three times today.

Still in the shell even! Those nuts always remind me of being a little girl at Christmas because my Dad always bought a bag. If I throw them peanuts, they let the little birds have the seeds.

It's warming up. Snow is gone from the rooftops and the green grass is starting to reappear. So much for their predicted 15-20 cm. of snow. Not that I mind. What we got when I was out driving around looking at lights last night was very we snow (and occasionally mixed with a bit of freezing rain). Made the lesser roads a little slick but nothing to worry about. Looking forward to enjoying warmer temps.

Hope you don't get any freezing rain with that Pam, that's what makes the roads treacherous.

I can just start to see the lower levels of the mountains and they've all had a beautiful fresh coat of snow. Now that's where I like the snow to be.

We got around 6", I'd guess. The birdies were happy to see the seed this morning...lol...I love watching them all out there, along with the squirrels and crows. It's like the country comes to visit me. I crack open the window so I can hear them chirping.

I was watching a squirrel in the snow this morning when I threw the food out. They're tame so they just wait for me to throw more. I chucked out a couple of handfulls and this little black squirrel leapt a good three feet across the snow to land on one. He looked very triumphant when he picked it up. Well today was a good day to finish up the holiday decorating as it wasn't fit to be out this afternoon or evening, 15-25 cms of the white stuff and gusts of 60km/hr. Riverstone, What a perfect day to decorate the tree... warm and cosy indoors, watching the snow come down. I do hope you get it shovelled before you start getting either wet snow or rain because it'll make it all weigh a ton and more exercise than than you want to shovel it.

Here it's just mild and soggy... which is perfectly fine with me.
