Have you ever noticed that the sum value of the parts of an item is always much greater than the whole (be it for a filter or canopy for your aquarium, etc)?
For example, if you buy a brand new filter for $50, replacement parts can total as much as $115. Granted you won't need to replace all of them but if that's ridiculous! Here's an example (http://www.bigalsonline.ca/BigAlsCA/ctl3664/cp17903/si1316627/cl0/marinelandpenguin350bpowerfilter).(Click on the Parts tab on the page.) Note that the price of the original brand new filter (everything included is listed at $49.99). Have a look at the price you'll have to pay for the parts. If you need more than a couple of parts you're better off simply buying another filter.
That is unless you can find used parts. If you're trying to source some, local club auctions are often a good place. You'll likely have to buy an the piece of equipment in it's entirety to get the parts you need. Sometimes you can get awesome deals on broken equipment from which you can salvage the parts required.
