Ive always wanted to try this.... i figure it could be possible in a HUGE aquarium, but do you think its possible to have two+ temps.. so you could house cold and tropical speices?
like one side of the tank around 60F and then other side 78F and then have them gradually meet in temp in the middle. the only thing i could think wouldnt work is if a fish darted from oneside to the other and died of the shock.
whats your opinion?

I think the waterflow would be your pain - it would have to be very low to non-existent. Otherwise it could be warmer at one end with a heater on one side, but it would never be that drastic - probably on the cool side.
Alot of fish sold as tropical can actually thrive in lower temps (mid-high 60's) - Danios, Loaches, some Cory's, some Plecos/Catfish, White Clouds, some Barbs, Paradise Fish, many Livebearers, Sunfish, Sticklebacks, Neons etc. A lot of fish classed as cold water can also go a bit warmer, such as the fancy Goldfish (Shubumkins, Moors, etc).

My heater in my 70g tank is close to the bottom near one end of the tank. However, I have a lot of water flow so there is very little difference in the tank temp from one end to the other. However, the tank is next to the window. So when we had all the very cold weather a while ago (and the window actually had ice forming on it) the temp dropped at that end. I didn't check it but knew it must be somewhat colder as although the fish swam throughout the tank most of the fish went and hung out by the heater a lot. (Kind of like coming in and sitting in front a fire after a walk on a cold day. )

Just an idea but wouldn't it be the same as running a tank with inadequate heating??? Then wouldn't the heater just run 24/7 at one end and burn itself out? :err:
Unless as Melody says you have very little water flow.

yeah if figured that, so melodys way, i can create almost no flow with Fluidized Bed Filter, or huge sponges, it wwouldnt be to hard to do

I'd say the best bet to have cool and warm water species is to have 2 tanks! lol
Yes, I think it's possible if your tank was huge and you didn't have water flow. The heater would warm up one side and the other side would take a very long time to warm up. However, as stated by witchlight , it would be on 24/7.
I'd say keep the cool water fish seperate from the more tropical fishes. That way both kinds of fishes are happy. Good luck

That's another one of my fish wishes, and I thought about doing it before I bought the 90. If you had two tanks, exactly the same and two stands exactly the same, preferrably nice cabinet stands, it could be made to look all one piece...at first glance at least. So it could look like you have aggressives and community fish in the same tank, or cold and tropical.
You could really play with fooling the eye too. Where the tanks connect you could have the waves of sand going up, meeting on the other side of the glass at the same height and going down. You could also use those ornaments that can be placed side by side along the back so they look like one ornament... or even saw one ornament in half. .

thats a cool idea, and it just happens i have 2 of the same tank, all i need is the proper stand.

Yes I suppose that all one stand would create the illusion better. This sounds like a job for Mr. BC_Kron!
You could have a big piece of driftwood sawed in half to create the center.

haha ill see. but if you really need lots of room and quick with no construction needed just get cinder blocks and 2x10's and you can have tons of space. [idea stole from Noah's pet arch] lol
