A work in progress. I know, it bugs me also that there is no backround. When I set it up it was a wham bam operation and wasn't able to pick up and put on one. Otherwise I am also not sure on whether to keep it bare or not. I am worried these monsters will make too much mess for me to keep up with if there is a substrate.

Quite the collection you have there. Thanks for sharing. The only I find with a bare bottom tank is you can see every thing they leave behind which drove me crazy and I was not about to start vacuuming everyday, so put in a substrate. At least now it does not show too much.

That is quite the collection of fish you have there. Very nice. I bet they do keep you busy cleaning up after them and you appear to be doing an amazing job. Like Pam, I tried bare bottom tanks but hated seeing the poop there all the time which of course if not vacuumed up very frequently, just got swished around into the water. At least with a substrate it tends to sit in one place until you do a gravel vac.

wow, what an attraction, you should charge admission.
I love your huge tank, the different species of fish are very unusual and so nice to see.

Looks like some nice fish, good pictures !
I agree, those fish would probably make short work of any decorating.
I have found though, even a thin layer of substrate can help make a tank look good without making cleaning any more of a chore.
Keep us updated as you make changes, I'd like to see how it turns out.

I agree with Blaine a thin layer does make it look cleaner and it is much easier to vac than a normal amount of gravel. And if you are not adding any real plants, you don't need it to be a lot.

I've also seen ceramic tiles used as a "substrate" in a large predator tank (Aros and Bichirs). They make some that have a very natural rock-like look. Rona even cuts tiles for you at the store so make sure to measure the inside of your tank before you go shopping.

Ceramic tiles. Cool idea. They won't show the poop as much, look more natural (if you get a 'rock-look' type and yet still easy to vacuum the bottom of the tank.

Tiles would be pretty interesting.

They are also chemically inert :3
