I've got a couple of those floating planters in the pond and I found the foam from one on the bank this morning sans planter. I'm not too worried about losing the planter as it was not doing well, but I'm going to have a buttload of dirt in the filter now.

Oh not good!!

Maybe they needed a life preserver to get to the fish!

I went out to feed the fish one morning and the Raccoons came running up to me, until I advised them I was not there to feed them. They've likely been eating the food out of the feeding ring and confused the planter (also round) with the feeding ring.

Time to bring out the electric fence again.

Ahh! Do you have to keep it on long, until they stop visiting the pond?

Before I did the upgrade (deeper, larger and steep sides) I left the fence stakes (rebar painted green) in all the time. Once the raccoons got zapped they would stay away; they would even teach the babies to stay clear. This batch has never had the treatment obviously.

Mischievious creatures! I guess they figured you were providing a dinner buffet for them daily. They're smart, too, which is why I guess they quickly learn about the electric fence and teach the little ones.

Raccoons love fish, its part of their diet.

what you can do is leave out a bowel of cheap cat crunchies away from the pond, if they get enough of that, they won't try and eat your fish.

I don't really mind the Raccoons, it only takes a little effort to keep them out of trouble. But I don't like to encourage them, as the neighbours have been known to kill them; nature lovers that they are. :realmad:

I just don't understand anyone who could kill one of those furry critters. They are cute, even if they can provide quite a challenge when it come to keeping them out of things.

I had a big planter tipped into our pond at school - not by raccoons, but by something worse - a clumsy art teacher.
It was a mess, but in a day or two, all the green water vanished, never to return. The fish weren't even bothered and the filter did fine.

I can't see the bottom so I'm not sure how the planter ended up. I was not planning to drain the entire pond, but I may have to. The filter is a 100 gallons, buts thats still a lot of dirt.

Best of luck with it... sure hope you don't have to drain the pond.

your neighbors kill them, why?

if your garbage's have bungee cords like ours do, we have never had problems with them.

and just make sure the chimney has a netting.....so simple.

I thought they were eating your fish, good to know they are easier scared away.
