View Full Version : Snails in a shrimp tank

I've got an outbreak of snails in my shrimp tank.
Of course they all eat the same food so if I cut back on what little feeding I do, I'm afraid the shrimp will suffer.
It's a 10 gl tank and it must be getting close to 100 shrimp in there so I don't want to cut the food right off.
I'm thinking about taking all the shrimp and floating plants out and bleaching the gravel. I know, I know, I'll make sure there is no residual bleach left.
Is there a way to kill any snail eggs that might be on the plants without killing the plant?
I'm also thinking maybe I'll change the gravel bottom for polished rocks about 2 inches across.
Any ideas?

I have bleached gravel and put it back in a tank, after much rinsing and lots of declor and airing. If they are mts, some of them will survive, they are indestructable. There is a bleach dip you can use for plants, 19 parts water to one parts bleach. But some plants will not survive, crypts are one. What I did do is only put a thin layer of gravel in so it vacumms easier, using a white bucket to find all the shrimp after. You can use pots for the plants, I just have moss in mine and naja grass.

Have you thought of using assassin snails?? My "hired guns" have gotten rid of all my snails in their tank and they leave everything else alone. (I'm actually having to get "pest snails" from boyfriend to keep the assassins fed)

Didn't think of the 'assassin snails', will they leave the shrimp alone?
All the plants are floating, reccia and guppy grass, I think they are.
Will bleach kill the snail eggs?

The assassins should be fine with the shrimp as they're slower than them. Mine only seem to eat other snails. The other option is a potassium permangate dip for the plants. Others(help me please) should be able to tell you how this works as I've never done it. I've been fortunate enough not to have a major snail problem and now am trying to increase my snail population so I can keep my assassins breeding.
