View Full Version : I stink at building houses...

I have a pair of peacock gudgeons and my male has informed me that I flat out stink at building a suitable house for him. He inspected it once and promptly left, never to return again. Here's what I gave him. If anyone has a better suggestion to improve his housing conditions I will gladly give it a try.

Looks fine to me, but then I know nothing about gudgeons. Hope some one has some suggestions for you. I think he is just fussy!!

Sure, I'd use it as my summer cottage. It has a waterfront view doesn't it? Maybe it's all about location.

Mmmm... Location. Good Suggestion! Maybe he would prefer a view of the rolling hills of moss, or perhaps at the base of wood mountain... I will try moving it around a bit after I finish ripping the tank apart. At the very least, maybe I will fool him into thinking it is a new and beautiful architechtural masterpiece worthy of inhabitance.

I have no idea why he wouldn't like it... (not that I know anything about the preferences of peacock gudgeons)....looks great to me. If you try different locations, give him some time to decide and let us know how it works out.

I don't get a lot of territorial breeders interested in open ended pipes. Capped pipes, yes. Two entrances can be hard to defend.
Maybe with the java moss, the poor guy doesn't want to move in and have to cut the lawn on the first day.

So you think he might like it a little better if I cut off the second exit? Would just putting it against the glass or an object work or do I physically have to attach something to it?

Picky picky
When I was keeping peacock gudgeons, they liked single, open ended pieces of PVC just fine. Must be the neighborhood! Perhaps put a couple more single pieces around the tank?

Try backing it on to something. Andrew's had a different experience than me - my peacocks always liked closed tubes, but I was never able to breed them either. I like that little fish, but I had no success.

ok, all this talk of peacock gudgeons made me google it:

I dunno, I think I would still prefer your condo unit.

He's a country boy - country people don't like multi-unit dwellings.
Way out of my league other than adding my expertise as a smartbutt, which some claim I excel at.
