While my area's newspaper helps sponsor various different charities throughout the year, perhaps none (during the time it's run) is more successful than what is known as the Sporting Christmas fund.
First started in 1976 by the sports dept., many of the original donator's were sports teams and organizations. The Salvation Army receives the monies, and helps families in need during the holiday season. That first year $8,345 was raised, and it now sometimes see's that number reached in a day or two. Last month they hit the 1 million dollar all time mark, and on Tues. reached $50,000 quicker than any previous year.
Given the size of the city and the fact they (as of yet) don't take any donations on-line, I think that's quite an accomplishment.
If anyone is able to help out, please mail or drop off your donation to:
Sporting Christmas,
c/o The Star Phoenix,
204 Fifth Ave. North
Saskatoon, Sask., S7K 2P1
I've heard other papers have similar drives, so if you know of one in your area please post.
I would also like to take this time and thank CAC for providing a special section dedicated to the important aspect of charities. :notworthy:
