Join us on April 25 for a peaceful pilgrimage to Burns Bog - a free multifaith event to see and understand the significance and sacredness of Burns Bog.

The pilgrimage will start at Annacis Island, continuing over the Alex Fraser Bridge and conclude in the Delta Nature Reseve. Throughout the journey there will be commentary by various environmental organizations and faith representatives, prayer and singing.

This event is organized by the Pilgrimage to Burns Bog Committee, with participating groups including Burns Bog Conservation Society (http://www.burnsbog.org), Vancouver Unitarians (http://www.vancouver.unitarians.ca), Anglican EcoJustice (http://www.anglican.ca/about/committees/pmej.htm), Kairos (http://www.kairoscanada.org) and the Wilderness Committee (http://www.wildernesscommittee.org). Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. Bicycle storage will be available for those wishing to bike.

Darn it, I wish I was close to Vancouver on that date - that is something I would love to have attended. But I'm certainly putting this in my special "things to see" calendar. Thanks, Melody. I looked at the photos from the Bog - what a garden of Eden! And the cranes!!!

We took my Son's class there for a field trip when he was younger and it's like stepping into another world. The ground is spongy with peat, wildlife is everywhere... just amazing. They cautioned us against things like throwing an apple core to the ground, as they're trying to get rid of all the introduced plant species. It's all a very big undertaking, but well worth it.

What a wonderful place, thanks for posting those links. There is a relatively small bog within city limits where I live and it is a great place to visit but being in the city and the amount of visitors has really started to take it's toll on the plants/animals.

When you said "spongy with peat", you triggered a really special memory for me, Melody. I think I was about 8 or 9 when my dad took me fishing to a very remote spot. It was a bit boggy and at one point we entered the "spongy" feeling area. He stopped and told me to stick my hand through the "ground". I yelped when my hand went through about 1/2 foot or so of peat and hit the water underneath. He just laughed. I could not believe we were actually walking on water covered with a thin carpet of vegetation.

Thank you for triggering that memory.

That's certainly now on my list of places to go if I get out to the west coast. I have enjoyed visiting eastern peat bogs and wetlands (no, I'm no hunter, just a tromper around). I'd love to see the west coast version.
So many places to go to! What a world.

Before or after taking me out to lunch? I can just hear it now "Honey, I'm going to Burn's Bog right after I take a chick that I met on the internet out for lunch ... wanna come too? Don't worry, her big finnage doesn't do a thing for me."
