I just bought a marineland 100 filter and I think it is making more noise than it should be. I saw it said on the manual about if there is excess noise to check the pump part for debri and I thouroughly washed it (more than once) and nothing has changed. Its loud enough that i have to unplug it as it keeps me up. Any advice? I feel like taking it back tomorrow

Hi and :Welcome: Sorry to hear you're having problems with the filter. Is it a noisy impellor? I use the larger Marineland Penguins without any noise problems but I did have a Penguin mini at one time (that'a a smaller filter than the one you're using) and it was noisy if the water level was too low.

How far below the outflow is your water level?

What substrate is in your tank?

I had a very bad expierience with them filters, the same models. 4 in a row three different stores all bad, and at 230am a screeching impeller will wake even the deadest man.

The water level is almost right at the top, the water coming out is very quiet with that special lid but the noise is definitely the impelor thing. The tank is a ten gallon and my substrate is gravel about pea sized or a bit larger. Thank you for the fast replies

The water level sounds fine. I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions how to reduce the noise. If the filter is new (and under warranty) maybe you could speak to them at the store where you bought it and they might be willing to either replace the impellor or the filter itself for one that doesn't make all that racket. Good luck resolving the problem.

On my ACs, sometimes I shoot some cooking spray into the impeller. It's not harmful to the fish(unless they're cooked in it) and can be scooped off the water later. Just an idea!!

Also, make sure the impeller "thingy" is properly inserted in the little hole it goes into. If it's the type of filter I'm thinking it is, sometimes you have to press it in really hard and then make sure it is perfectly centered. Otherwise, take it back. Those things can be a pain!

OH I hate noise ....even the water noise drives me nutty ....I switched all my filters out ...my 10 gl's now have the whisper 40I IN THEM AND NEVER A NOISE ..but I have to keep my water level lower .

I have found sometimes the lid vibrates and makes the same noise as the impeller ....
Is it new ? maybe you can take it back and swap out for another see if that works ....

Good luck and Welcome !

i have a new 55 gal aqueon filter and it was pretty loud when i first bought it, i thought the noise was the impeller but after some detective work i found out it as the water flow at the top end of the intake, the whole problem was solved by putting a piece of filter foam over the top of the intake. it also helps with the water splashing out of the sump

Have a Fluval 305, works perfect. A mouse fart is louder.

If it isn't bubbles...perhaps people can try plugging the unit in and unplugging. I've heard that doing this actually sometimes works. Perhaps a few grains of sand was near the impeller and the cycling of the plug kicks out the sand. dunno...just thinking.
