Hello all,

Being rather new to these forums, I don't always know the meaning of some of the terms used here and elsewhere among aquarium enthusiasts. Specifically I've heard mention alpha-numeric codes in reference to fish specimens. Particular examples would be F-## or L###. Can anyone please explain this system of classification to a newbie?

F numbers refer to generations from wild caught (WC) fish. F1 fish would have WC parents, F2 would have F1 parents and so on.

The L numbers are used to classify plecostomus species that have yet to receive a scientific name. For example L-046, the very popular zebra pleco.
